As the largest infrastructure\nproject in Kansas City\u2019s history, the new $1.5 billion single Kansas City\nInternational (MCI) terminal will be one of the most inclusive in the U.S. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Exterior-side-view-at-KCI-Credit-Skidmore-Owings-Merril-editl.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24797\" width=\"330\" height=\"185\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Exterior-side-view-at-KCI-Credit-Skidmore-Owings-Merril-editl.jpg 600w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Exterior-side-view-at-KCI-Credit-Skidmore-Owings-Merril-editl-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 330px) 100vw, 330px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>With features including a sensory room, all-gender restrooms\nwith adult-sized changing tables, and an \u201cairplane simulation room\u201d that will\nallow extra-weary travelers \u2013 including young children \u2013 to practice going\nthrough security and boarding a real aircraft, the terminal is setting new\naccessibility and inclusiveness standards for the industry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor the last four years the project team has worked\ndiligently to keep the new terminal on schedule and on budget,\u201d said Pat Klein,\ndirector of aviation. \u201cAs we approach the finish line, I can\u2019t help but thank\nthe stakeholders who\u2019ve contributed greatly and the residents of the entire\nregion for their ongoing support.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sleek, contemporary terminal will feature $5.6 million\nin commissioned art from 28 international, regional and local artists. The new\nterminal is aiming to be LEED Gold certified, and it\u2019s designed to provide\nample natural light, with a maximized window-to-wall ratio and the use of\nnatural elements wherever possible. The external windows are designed to reduce\nglare, and parking garages are powered by solar panels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Garage-view-Credit-BNIM-edit.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24798\" width=\"353\" height=\"197\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The facility will also include an expanded parking lot with\n6,100 spaces, 15 family restrooms, 10 dedicated infant feeding rooms, a family\nplay zone, indoor\/outdoor pet relief areas, meeting spaces, all-glass passenger\njet bridges and more. The modern terminal will also feature dining options\nunique to the region, including Stockyards Brewing, Urban Caf\u00e9, Bo Lings and\nMeat Mitch, among others. Other updates include live music by local musicians\non stages and an outdoor courtyard connected to the arrivals level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re thrilled to usher in a new era of air travel for the\nKansas City community as the new terminal brings remarkable upgrades and enhancements\nfor travelers and employees who work at the airport,\u201d said Steve Sisneros, vice\npresident of airport affairs at Southwest Airlines. \u201cAs the airline with the\nmost flights from Kansas City, we\u2019re looking forward to connecting travelers to\nthe people and places important in their lives through the world-class\nfacilities that will soon serve as the region\u2019s new front door. We appreciate\nthe dedication and partnership of the Kansas City Aviation Department and the\nvision of Kansas City to build a terminal the city can be proud of for decades\nto come.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Tuesday, February 28, at 1 a.m. CST, all flights will\nswitch from the existing \u201chorseshoe\u201d terminal \u2013 largely unchanged since it was\noriginally constructed in 1972 \u2013 to the new terminal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Concessions-at-KCI-Credit-Vantage-Airport-Group-edit.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24799\" width=\"300\" height=\"193\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Concessions-at-KCI-Credit-Vantage-Airport-Group-edit.jpg 650w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Concessions-at-KCI-Credit-Vantage-Airport-Group-edit-300x194.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith thousands of global visitors coming to KC in the next\nfew years to experience the NFL Draft, 2026 FIFA World Cup and more, the new\nMCI terminal will elevate the region\u2019s first and last impression for travelers\nas they come through the KC Heartland,\u201d said Tim Cowden, president and CEO at\nthe Kansas City Area Development Council. \u201cThis state-of-the-art terminal\nboasts inclusive spaces and extensive upgrades, which will support our ongoing\nefforts to attract new business and talent to the region.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new terminal has already played a role in a successful\neffort for Kansas City to host the 2023 NFL Draft and the region\u2019s bid to be a\nhost city for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Both play into the larger effort to show\noff Kansas City to the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project was a team effort led by the Kansas City\nAviation Department, Edgemoor Infrastructure and Real Estate and joint venture\nClark | Weitz | Clarkson. The Build KCI project generated up to 5,000\nconstruction-related jobs. More than 240 firms from the Kansas City region were\non the project, with more than 130 minority- and women-owned business partners.\nThe project was funded using 100 percent tax-exempt debt \u2013 the most\ncost-efficient approach.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kansas City will officially open its new 1-million-square-foot terminal on Feb. 28.
