He is also\ncharged with monitoring and fostering emerging aviation technologies in the\nstate to include sustainable aviation fuels, electric and hybrid aircraft, as\nwell as advanced\/urban\/regional air mobility (electric vertical takeoff and\nlanding aircraft \u2013 eVTOLs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ison\u2019s background includes a mix of airline and aviation\nhigher education. He was an airline pilot for over 10 years (Delta Connection\nand ATA Airlines) and then went into aviation higher education for 17 years. He\nhas flown small general aviation aircraft, gliders, regional turboprops, Boeing\n737s, and Lockheed L1011s. He said he feels lucky he\u2019s been able to fly all over\nthe world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ison said he is excited to get back into the aviation\nindustry. \u201cThis role was unique in that it would expose me to a mix of new and\nfamiliar parts of the aviation industry and I have also been highly involved in\nemerging aviation topics in my previous educational positions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of his hobbies include traveling, hiking, kayaking,\nsailing, flying, and fly fishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interesting facts about Ison:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>He has written four books and over 100 journal\nand magazine articles \u2013 most on aviation topics.<\/li><li>He roasts his own coffee and may even start his\nown roastery someday!<\/li><li>He has dabbled in blacksmithing.<\/li><li>He is currently trying to perfect his oyster\nshucking skills \u2013 and greatly enjoying the rewards.<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>David Ison recently joined WSDOT Aviation Division for Airport Land Use Compatibility &amp; Emerging Aviation Technologies.
