MSP\u2019s year-end passenger and operations report\nreleased today shows the airport is on a steady and promising recovery path\nafter three years of impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur recovery over the last year included several bright\nspots, highlighted by a continued expansion of domestic routes and a\nsignificant rebound in international service,\u201d said Brian Ryks, CEO of the\nMetropolitan Airports Commission, which operates MSP. \u201cAs we look to further\nclose the gap to pre-pandemic passenger levels, we\u2019re encouraged airlines have\nalready announced new destinations and flight frequencies for 2023 and that\nthey continue to utilize larger aircraft with more seat capacity to meet\nincreased demand out of MSP.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MSP\u2019s 31.2 million passengers in 2022 marks a 79% recovery\nto the 39.6 million total passengers in 2019. Passenger activity dropped to\n14.9 million in 2020 and has increased by 16.3 million passengers over the last\ntwo years. MSP supported 310,235 aircraft operations (takeoffs and landings,\nall types of aircraft) in 2022, up 2% from 2021\u2019s 303,892 operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/metroairports.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2023-01\/MSP%202022%20Passenger%20%26%20Operations%20Summary.pdf\">Click here for a summary of 2022 MSP statistics.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scheduled passenger airline flights accounted for 89% of all\naircraft operations at MSP, averaging 756 per day, up from a daily average of\n741 in 2021. Another airline trend in the last year has been the change in\nfleet mix. Airlines at MSP are increasingly operating routes with larger\naircraft\u2014which offer more seats per flight\u2014to meet demand across their\nnetworks. Available seats on all departing flights grew by 7% in 2022 compared\nto the previous year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Major airline carrier operations grew more than 19% in 2022,\ntotaling 180,798 operations. Operations by regional airlines, which typically\nfly 50-76 seat aircraft, totaled 95,248 \u2014 a decline of 20% versus 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Total non-stop destinations grew to 145 \u2013 up from 137 in\n2021 \u2013 due to a combination of new routes and returning destinations previously\npaused during the pandemic. International travel saw its most significant\nrebound from pandemic impacts in 2022, with more than two million passengers\nflying to or from the Twin Cities. This is a 175% increase over 2021. The\nrestart of several international routes included Delta\u2019s non-stop service to\nLondon and Seoul, and Condor\u2019s route to Frankfurt. Air Canada and Sun Country\nalso launched new non-stops from MSP to Canada &#8211; Montreal and Vancouver,\nrespectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The top five airlines in passenger market share in 2022\nwere:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Delta* 71.10%<\/li><li>Sun Country 10.80%<\/li><li>American* 4.60%<\/li><li>Southwest 4.40%<\/li><li>United* 4.20%<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Percentages rounded. *Includes regional affiliates.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most popular passenger aircraft at MSP in 2022 was the\nBoeing 737-800 with more than 35,800 operations, or 11.7% of all jet activity.\nThe Airbus A321 was a close second with more than 35,500 operations, or 11.6%\nof all jet operations at MSP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The total amount of cargo goods transported through MSP held\nsteady in 2022, totaling 236,450 metric tons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To start 2023, airlines are operating an average of 358\ndepartures a day, with first quarter total seats tracking 7.5% greater than\n2022.
