Leveraging Vantis, the state\u2019s first-of-its-kind UAS\nnetwork, uAvionix, a drone company, received approval by the Federal Aviation\nAdministration (FAA) to conduct beyond visual line-of-sight (BVLOS) drone\nflights in North Dakota. uAvionix demonstrated to the FAA that it established\nadequate risk mitigations to satisfy required safety standards for the\nspecified BVLOS operation within the national airspace system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

North Dakota leads the way in bringing UAS to commercial\nsectors safely and economically with Vantis. This success adds to the\nfoundation that Vantis has set for the next phase of operation this summer and\nthe state continues to lead the way for autonomy and automation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis first-of-its-kind approval for our partners is a\ncritical step that validates our state\u2019s investment and years of work to bring\nUAS aircraft to commercial sectors in a safe and economic way,\u201d said North\nDakota Governor Doug Burgum. \u201cOther states are reaching out to us as a national\nleader in UAS.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Northern Plains UAS Test Site, administering Vantis for\nthe state of North Dakota, partnered with Thales USA to develop and implement\nVantis, a UAS system that allows UAS pilots to command and control the UAS and\nsee and avoid other aircraft when flying beyond the visual line of sight.\nVantis consists of ground-based aviation infrastructure, like that used in\ntraditional aviation, which significantly lowers the barrier of entry to BVLOS\nflights for multiple users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cVantis was designed and implemented to serve many drone\noperators across multiple sectors,\u201d said Trevor Woods, Executive Director at\nthe Northern Plains UAS Test Site. \u201cThis first approval is an important\nmilestone for Vantis, as a blueprint for widespread commercial BVLOS\nenablement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
