The grand opening for Memphis International Airport’s\nConsolidated De-Icing Facility was held on Tuesday, November 29. Dignitaries\nand leaders from Memphis and Washington, D.C. joined the Memphis-Shelby County\nAirport Authority in celebrating the facility, which was completed just in time\nfor the heavy holiday cargo season. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Among the speakers at the event were U.S. Department of\nTransportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, FAA Deputy Administrator A. Bradley\nMims, Congressman Steve Cohen, City of Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland, MSCAA\nBoard Chairman Michael Keeney, and Memphis International Airport President and\nCEO Scott Brockman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis holiday season and every season, it\u2019s critical that\nAmerican families and businesses get the goods they need when they need them,\u201d\nsaid U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. \u201cMemphis International\nAirport is the biggest cargo airport in the country, and this innovative\naircraft de-icing facility is one of the many ways we\u2019re modernizing America\u2019s\nsupply chains.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The facility is one of the largest of its kind in the world.\nIt provides a centralized location for passenger and cargo airlines to perform\ndeicing operations immediately prior to takeoff, which will streamline airline\noperations and lessen the chances of cancellations and delays. The total cost\nof the facility was $309 million, including FAA funding of $174 million and\nMSCAA funding of $135 million. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cInnovative projects like this are key to improving safety,\nincreasing efficiency and advancing sustainability across the country,\u201d said\nDeputy FAA Administrator A. Bradley Mims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The new facility represents more environmentally friendly\ndeicing operations with highly sophisticated drainage and collection\ncapabilities. There are 12 deicing pads at the facility capable of serving both\nlarge and smaller aircraft. Ground traffic at the CDF is coordinated from the\nnew 1600-square-foot control tower, and pilots are aided by electronic message\nboards at each bay and at queuing locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe want to thank the U.S. Dept. of Transportation, Federal\nAviation Administration and Memphis International Airport for their support of\nthis new Consolidated De-icing Facility – an example of how to deploy\ntechnology to improve operational efficiency,\u201d said Richard W. Smith, President\nand CEO, FedEx Express. \u201cThe timing could not be better as FedEx enters the\nbusy holiday season. This facility is a shining example of how we can help\nensure our team members are safely operating throughout the winter season as we\ndeliver outstanding service for our customers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is the culmination of approximately 10 years of\nplanning, stress, resilience, partnership, and collaboration,\u201d said Scott\nBrockman, MSCAA President and CEO. \u201cThe CDF will improve operations for both\npassenger and cargo carriers and will provide the new standard in winter\noperations and aircraft deicing management.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The event also provided MSCAA leaders, Mayor Strickland, and\nCongressman Cohen to meet with Secretary Buttigieg to discuss future funding\nneeds for projects such as modernization of the ticket lobbies and baggage\nareas.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
