U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and local,\nstate, and federal officials marked the milestone today at O\u2019Hare after the\nFederal Aviation Administration completed the project\u2019s environmental review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cChicago\u2019s transportation infrastructure is what makes this\ncity an economic powerhouse of global importance,\u201d said U.S. Transportation\nSecretary Pete Buttigieg. \u201cNow, as we prepare to break ground on O\u2019Hare\u2019s\nnewest terminal, Chicago and this entire region will be positioned to grow and\ncreate good-paying jobs through the benefits of first-rate infrastructure,\nbeginning with the construction project itself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The review analyzed Chicago Department of Aviation projects\nincluding new terminals, on-airport hotels, airfield and taxiway improvements\nand support facilities. It also reviewed the FAA\u2019s proposal to make permanent\nangled approaches to Runway 10R\/28L to allow simultaneous arrival to multiple\nrunways. The FAA concluded that proposed construction projects and changes to\nair traffic procedures will not significantly affect any environmental\nresources, including noise, air quality, water resources, and historic sites. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Secretary Buttigieg also met with students studying on\nChicago\u2019s Southside to become aviation maintenance technicians. During his\nvisit at the Aviation Institute of Maintenance, where American Airlines is\ntraining new technicians, the Secretary heard how students can learn the skills\nnecessary to move into good jobs in aviation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President Biden\u2019s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law has made\nmore than $73 million available to O\u2019Hare and more than $20 million to Midway\nInternational Airport in the first year. The law created three programs,\ninvesting $25 billion total over five years into the U.S. aviation system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FAA operates three air traffic control towers at O\u2019Hare and manages more than 700,000 annual arrivals and departures on eight runways at the airport.
