You may not realize all the ways that\nthose airplanes you see in the sky positively impact your daily life and Iowa\u2019s\noverall economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/airportrunway-edit.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23990\" width=\"277\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/airportrunway-edit.jpg 400w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/airportrunway-edit-300x219.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 277px) 100vw, 277px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A new report from the Iowa Department of Transportation\nhighlights aviation\u2019s uses in Iowa and quantifies its role in Iowa\u2019s economy.\nThe report shows that aviation generates $6.4 billion in economic impact every\nyear. This includes $1.8 billion related to airport activity and $4.6 billion\nto businesses that produce aircraft components and other aviation-related\nservices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the report, you\u2019ll see how commercial air service, air\ncargo, general aviation, and other special aviation services are essential to\nIowa and support business activity. Also included are the significant economic\nimpacts of military aviation units at airports around Iowa, and future impacts\nfrom emerging segments including Uncrewed Aircraft Systems commonly referred to\nas drones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"110\" height=\"142\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/timphoto.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23989\"\/><figcaption><em>Tim McClung<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe aviation and aerospace industries provide important\nservices and generate significant economic impact in Iowa,\u201d says Iowa DOT\nAviation Director, Tim McClung. \u201cHowever, the larger impact comes from the\nbenefits users gain by having a strong aviation system that supports the\nmovement of people and goods. A healthy and vibrant system is an important\ncomponent to Iowa\u2019s friendly business climate,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Iowa Aviation Economic Impact Report analyzed aviation\nuses including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Airline service (4 million passengers annually)<\/li><li>Air cargo (90,000 tons each year)<\/li><li>Military aviation (6 military units)<\/li><li>Business aviation (flights to 49 states and 27\ncountries)<\/li><li>Air medical (4,100 patient flights annually)<\/li><li>Aerial application (400+ aircraft spraying an\nestimated 5 million acres)<\/li><li>Public safety (using aircraft in law\nenforcement)<\/li><li>Grassroot aviation activity (personal travel, airshows,\ncharity flights)<\/li><li>Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (using cutting-edge\ntechnology)<\/li><li>Aviation education (5 higher education programs\nand flight training at 47 airports)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Information in the report is expected to assist aviation interested groups, including local, state, and federal officials, in making informed decisions related to operations and investments in Iowa\u2019s air transportation system. It will also be used in educating the public on the uses and benefits of aviation in Iowa.
