The Columbia City Council gave support\nfor a new terminal in December 2018. Work on the project began in May 2020 and\nwas completed last month. The first flight to the new terminal arrived the\nnight of Tuesday, Oct. 25, and the first flight out departed the next morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/COU_WebsiteShots_Surgener_002-edit.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23972\" width=\"340\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/COU_WebsiteShots_Surgener_002-edit.jpg 500w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/COU_WebsiteShots_Surgener_002-edit-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 340px) 100vw, 340px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The new facility, which is now fully operational, will\nimprove air travel for residents and visitors in mid-Missouri and serve as a\nmajor economic driver for the region. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only is the new 52,000-square-foot terminal more than\nthree times the size of its predecessor, it also features four gates with three\npassenger boarding bridges, more comfortable seating, increased charging outlets,\nand workstations for business travelers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New amenities also include a restaurant and bar (opening\nsoon), a mother\u2019s room, a sensory room and an interior Service Animal Relief\nArea (SARA). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cColumbia Regional Airport is the gateway to central Missouri,\u201d\nsaid Amy Schneider, director of the Columbia Convention and Visitors Bureau.\n\u201cWe now have a terminal that better reflects our region and is more welcoming\nto those visiting our area, creating that critical first impression.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>American Airlines currently offers three daily flights to\nand from Dallas-Fort Worth and two daily flights to and from Chicago and is\nplanning to start twice-daily service to and from Charlotte once passenger\ndemand increases from the pandemic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Air service at COU impacts a rapidly expanding catchment\narea with a population of nearly 520,000. COU\u2019s close proximity makes it the\nbest option for air travelers in mid-Missouri and best meets the region\u2019s\neconomic needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/COU_WebsiteShots_Surgener_007-edit.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23973\" width=\"316\" height=\"246\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/COU_WebsiteShots_Surgener_007-edit.jpg 600w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/COU_WebsiteShots_Surgener_007-edit-300x234.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 316px) 100vw, 316px\" \/><figcaption><em>The Missouri River is a prominent and cherished landmark of the area, making it a perfect visual to welcome visitors and locals alike. The mural, created by Jane Bick Mudd using acrylics, reflects some of the local ingenuity, outdoor recreation and community involvement that make Columbia and surrounding towns outstanding places to live. Missouri River was commissioned as a Percent for Art project and will be installed Summer 2022. <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCOU will play a key role in securing our region\u2019s economic\nfuture,\u201d said Stacey Button, director of economic development for the City of\nColumbia. \u201cThe new airport terminal will help existing businesses grow as well\nas drive the development of new economic opportunities in Columbia and\nthroughout mid-Missouri.\u201d&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The airport has also made improvements to its runways and\nparking lot. In November 2017, the airport reconstructed and lengthened the\ncrosswind runway to 5,500 feet. In December 2021, the airport completed an\nextension on its primary runway. This extension to 7,400 feet allows for larger\naircraft and increased safety areas, which helps landing and taking off during\ninclement weather.
