Grant funds in the amount of $1.7M from Gov. Little\u2019s\nLeading Idaho initiative helped repair and replace sections of badly damaged\nrunway at the small community airport in St. Anthony in October. The funds were\nused in conjunction with Idaho Airport Aid Program funding to complete the\nrunway reconstruction and eliminate a significant safety hazard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The consultant who managed the project, T-O Engineers,\nworked with the City of St. Anthony to help them reconstruct their only paved\nrunway and build a new partial parallel taxiway for additional hangar\ndevelopment. The existing runway pavement was rated in \u201cpoor\u201d condition in 2021\nand was projected to drop to \u201cvery poor\u201d within the next five years. The new partial\nparallel was constructed to provide access to the runway for existing and\nfuture hangars as well as improve safety at the airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aviation Program Manager for T-O Engineers, Jared Norton,\nreported that the design included utilizing a CRABS (Concrete Recycled Asphalt\nBase Stabilization) process on existing runway pavement that was still in good\ncondition and could be salvaged, which reduced construction costs and time,\nwhile providing a high-strength pavement section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project was not without its challenges, Norton said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDuring construction, we encountered unanticipated\nsubsurface conditions that impacted the CRABS process. T-O Engineers worked\nwith the city and contractor Depatco to quickly modify the design and allow the\nproject to continue moving forward on schedule. In the end, the city was able\nto complete the full project on time and under budget. \u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new runway will better serve the agricultural spraying\nneeds and general aviation operations at the small East Idaho airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
