The city of Glendale has announced that Matthew Smith has\nbeen selected as Glendale\u2019s Airport Administrator. Smith has worked in the\naeronautics field for over 20 years. He joins the city of Glendale after\nserving as the Airport Manager at the Grand Canyon National Park Airport (GCN) in\nTusayan, Arizona. GCN is owned and operated by the Arizona Department of\nTransportation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the Airport Administrator, Smith oversees the day-to-day\ntasks of the airport and has direct oversight of the operating budget and\ncapital improvement program. He will prepare both short and long-term plans for\nthe airport and the open acreage on the east side of the airport. Smith will\nwork closely with current airport tenants and prospective developers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are excited to bring Matt on board during what will be a\nvery pivotal time over the next five to ten years for the city\u2019s airport,\u201d said\nGlendale City Manager Kevin Phelps. \u201cHis qualifications and experience are an\nexcellent fit for the city as we get ready to aggressively pursue expansion and\ndevelopment of our airport and the surrounding area.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Smith spent the last four years as the Airport Manager at\nGrand Canyon National Park Airport where he oversaw their five-year capital\nimprovement program, negotiated leases with various tenants and raised money\nfor the airport with $6 million in FAA funding and $7 million in COVID relief\ngrants. Before that, he worked in various capacities with ADOT\u2019s Aeronautics\nDivision, the Yuma County Airport Authority, Transportation Security\nAdministration (TSA), America West Airlines and Williams-Gateway Airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMatthew was the ideal candidate who rose to the top of our\nlist because of his vast experience,\u201d said Transportation Director Shahid\nAbbas. \u201cThis includes managerial experience, grant management expertise, an\nunderstanding of FAA rules and regulations and extensive experience working on\ncapital improvement projects.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Smith holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Arts from\nHobart College and a Master of Science degree in Aviation Management from\nArizona State University. He also received a doctorate degree in Coast Guard\nStudies from Korea Maritime and Ocean University, along with certificates in\nConstruction Finance Management and Construction Project Management from\nColumbia University Engineering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGlendale is growing, and I am excited to lead the effort of\nplanning how our airport will grow as well,\u201d said Smith. \u201cI am pleased to join\na city with a strong strategic plan for growth and an incredible team focused\non mapping out the future of the airport.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
