Winant Award<\/a> to former NBAA board member and industry safety champion Doug Schwartz at the 2022 NBAA Business Aviation Convention &amp; Exhibition (NBAA-BACE) in Orlando, FL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schwartz served nearly 14 years on NBAA\u2019s Board of Directors\nprior to his retirement in 2016. He is a past chairman of NBAA\u2019s Safety\nCommittee, whose indelible contributions include the advancement of thinking\nabout business aviation safety around data-based initiatives that surface and\nprevent root causes for accidents. He was key to the integration of safety and security\nconsiderations and best practices as the chair of the NBAA Security Council,\nformed in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schwartz\u2019s body of knowledge in these arenas stems in part\nfrom his service as manager of global aviation services at ConocoPhillips,\noverseeing executive flight operations, corporate shuttle operations, global\ncharter flight support and aviation facilities management. He also held\naviation leadership roles at TAG Aviation and AT&amp;T and is a founder and\npast chairman of the board of the Morristown Aviation Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schwartz put his on-the-ground experience to work at\nFlightSafety International (FSI), where he worked for 25 years, driving the\ndevelopment of crew resource management (CRM) training and the introduction of\nCRM safety programs geared specifically toward business aviation operators, as\nwell as real-world flight simulation scenarios that have enhanced the safety of\nbusiness aviation, especially for helicopter operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDoug Schwartz was an early visionary in forming the\nprograms that today provide a data-based approach to the causes of accidents,\nand how the chain of those accidents can be broken in the future,\u201d said NBAA\nPresident and CEO Ed Bolen. \u201cHis continued, tireless work to advance business\naviation safety has extended well beyond his service with NBAA\u2019s Board of\nDirectors, in the best tradition set by John Winant. We are honored to\nrecognize Doug\u2019s continued leadership with this award.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2016, Schwartz received the Flight Safety Foundation\u2019s\n(FSF\u2019s) Business Aviation Meritorious Service Award. He also is a past\nrecipient of the Aviation Week &amp; Space Technology Laurels Award,\nrecognizing advances in flight operations and training, and the FSF-Airbus\nHuman Factors in Aviation Safety Award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First presented in 2009, NBAA\u2019s John H. Winant Award is\nbestowed annually to former members of the association\u2019s Board of Directors\nwhose service to the industry extends well beyond their tenure on the Board.\nThe award is named in honor of Mr. Winant, NBAA\u2019s first full-time staff\npresident, who served in that role for more than 15 years and paved a trail of\nremarkable achievements long after his tenure with the association.
