The Board of the Aero Club of Washington<\/a> has announced that Stephen Alterman, President of the Cargo Airline Association, has been selected as the recipient of the 2022 Donald D. Engen Aero Club Trophy for Aviation Excellence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Established in 1993, the Engen Trophy is awarded for \u201c\u201c\u2026 a\nrecord of lifetime achievement; or a single event; or a series of acts by an\nindividual; a team; or by a corporation or organization that reaffirms the\nWright Brothers\u2019 standard of excellence in aviation.\u201d Previous recipients\ninclude Herb Kelleher, the STS-114 Discovery Shuttle Crew, Scott Crossfield,\nthe Tuskegee Airmen, and the 2021 recipient, Linda Hall Daschle. The permanent\ntrophy resides in the Smithsonian\u2019s National Air and Space Museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stephen Alterman began his career in aviation in 1968 in the\nBureau of Enforcement for the United States Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB).\nInitially hired as a Trial Attorney, he was soon promoted to Chief of the Legal\nDivision. He joined the Cargo Airline Association in 1975 as Executive Director\nand was named President in 1982. For the last 40 years, Alterman has led the\nassociation in promoting the all-cargo air carrier industry, formulating\nindustry policy, and overseeing the association\u2019s daily activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alterman\u2019s expertise and professionalism are universally\nrespected and valued by both industry and government. Throughout his career, he\nhas volunteered to serve on countless committees, commissions, and advisory\nboards, including the FAA Management Advisory Council; Aviation Security\nAdvisory Committee; National Freight Advisory Committee; FAA Research,\nEngineering, and Development Advisory Committee; and the Federal Airport Noise\nWorking Group. Alterman is also a strong supporter of sensible efforts to\nreduce the environmental impact of aviation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a passionate advocate for diversity in the aviation\nworkforce, Alterman has spent his time and resources supporting programs that\neducate and recruit young people with limited economic resources for skilled\njobs in aviation. In 2021, he was honored by Vaughn College for his efforts to\npromote opportunities in aviation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
