Photo Credit: Vermont Wing, Civil Air Patrol. <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The survey missions have been crewed to date by Capt\nJonathan Mercer, Mission Pilot and Co-Commander the Wing\u2019s Bennington Composite\nSquadron (VT-076); and 1st Lts Gerald Coleman and Anthony Derderian, Mission Pilots\nwith the Vermont Wing\u2019s Burlington Senior Squadron (VT-002) based in S.\nBurlington. Capt John Compo, Vermont Wing Director of Operations, supervises\nthe missions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Flights taken with the Vermont Wing of the Civil Air Patrol\nenable the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation to survey the\nentire state of Vermont and identify areas of forest disturbance. These\ndisturbances include defoliation by forest pests, areas of tree mortality, and\nforest damage due to weather events, among other causes.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese CAP flights are a great asset for our ongoing\nsurveillance of the health of Vermont\u2019s forests,\u201d said Joshua Halman, Forest\nHealth Program Manager with the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and\nRecreation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAerial surveys of this kind are essential to identifying\ndisturbances caused by pests and diseases, as well as the impacts of abiotic\nfactors on our forests.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur ongoing support of the Department of Forests, Parks and\nRecreation, offers an excellent demonstration of the Wing\u2019s versatility, our\nall-volunteer air crews, and fuel-efficient Cessna aircraft,\u201d said Col Richard\nBeach, Commander of the Vermont Wing. \u201cWe look forward to helping the\nDepartment in future conservation missions.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Vermont Wing of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) has launched its third year of collaboration with the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation.
