{"id":23251,"date":"2022-08-22T17:41:29","date_gmt":"2022-08-22T17:41:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/saj.pachecostudios.com?p=23251"},"modified":"2022-08-22T17:41:31","modified_gmt":"2022-08-22T17:41:31","slug":"aopas-air-safety-institute-releases-early-analysis-of-midair-collision-at-watsonville-municipal-airport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/index.php\/national-news\/aopas-air-safety-institute-releases-early-analysis-of-midair-collision-at-watsonville-municipal-airport\/%20","title":{"rendered":"AOPA\u2019s Air Safety Institute Releases Early Analysis of Midair Collision at Watsonville Municipal Airport"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association Air Safety\nInstitute (ASI) released a new video from its Early Analysis series providing\nan initial examination of a tragic accident that took place this past Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On August 18, 2022, a twin-engine Cessna 340A with two\npersons on board and a single-engine Cessna 152 with one person on board\ncollided on final approach at Watsonville Municipal Airport in California.\nSadly, all three occupants were killed in the tragic collision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The weather was VFR, clear, with 10 miles visibility. The\nCessna 152 had been doing traffic pattern work and was on a left base for\nRunway 20 turning final. The twin Cessna was on a straight-in approach for\nRunway 20.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn Early Analysis: Midair Collision at Watsonville\nMunicipal, the AOPA Air Safety Institute wants to help pilots understand what\nis known about the accident as we look at factors that are likely to be a\nsubject of the official investigation, which is the responsibility of the\nNational Transportation Safety Board (NTSB),&#8221; said AOPA&#8217;s ASI Senior Vice\nPresident Richard McSpadden. \u201cThis accident appears to be a midair collision as\na result of a faster airplane overtaking a slower airplane on final approach.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McSpadden continued, \u201cADS-B tracking data appears to\nindicate that the twin\u2019s airspeed was high during descent and final approach to\nthe runway.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Early Analysis videos provide an initial assessment of\nprominent mishaps that generate large public interest and may indicate\nimportant safety lessons for the general aviation community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>View the new video <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aopa.org\/training-and-safety\/online-learning\/early-analysis\/KWVI-MidAir\">here<\/a> and the entire series <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aopa.org\/training-and-safety\/online-learning\/early-analysis\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association Air Safety Institute (ASI) released a new video from its Early Analysis series providing an initial examination of a tragic accident that took place this past Thursday.
