Photo&nbsp;by&nbsp;<\/em> <em>M<\/em>itchell <em>Tant, Snapshot Studios.  <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The National Coalition of Aviation and Space Education (NCASE)\nis a non-profit formed in 1993 to foster collaboration between government,\nindustry, and academia to promote aerospace education on local, state and\nnational levels. We present two awards a year, the Crown Circle Award for Aerospace\nLeadership, and the Dr. Mervin K. Strickler, Jr. Aerospace Leadership Award.\nDue to COVID, NCASE delayed presentation of these 2020 awards until this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Crown Circle Award for Aerospace Leadership was first\npresented in 1979 by the FAA and the Civil Air Patrol to recognize those\nindividuals or organizations who demonstrate sustained involvement and\ncommitment to aerospace education, Outstanding leadership in aerospace\neducation locally or regionally and have made a significant contribution to the\nfield of aviation and space education. Previous awardees have been A. Scott\nCrossfield, Charles \u201cChuck\u201d Yeager, Mary Feik, the Challenger Center for Space\nScience Education, the Civil Air Patrol -Aerospace Education Program and many\nother notables in aerospace education. McComb was recognized as the 2020 Crown\nCircle Awardee for his continued leadership in aerospace programs at Raisbeck\nAviation High School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McComb was nominated by his principal, Therese Tipton. \u201cScott\nhas been educating high school students for the past 21 years. Over his past 17\nyears teaching, he has developed, enhanced, and implemented an outstanding\nprogram of aerospace educations of one of the top STEM prep schools in the\nnation,\u201d said Tipton. \u201cScott is a teacher leader who is deeply respected in the\naerospace community and is recognized as an exemplary educator by industry\nmembers, colleagues, parents, and students. Scott is a lifelong learner with a\ngrowth mindset, he works to improve his academic competences through a variety\nexperience to enhance the aerospace education opportunities for all our\nstudents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He holds a private pilot license, has had internships with\nvarious industry partners and academic programs, and has been the Washington\nState Science Olympiad Chair, was the first faculty advisor for the\nAIAA-Pacific Northwest Student Branch. He has been nationally recognized as a\nScott Crossfield Educator of the Year, is a National Board-Certified Teacher,\namong other accreditations and awards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McComb starts his new 9<sup>th<\/sup> graders off the summer\nbefore 9<sup>th<\/sup> grade by initiating student inquiry and problem-solving\nskills by giving them a Heat Shield project. This allows the students to begin\nthe design process and learn through trial and error that \u201cthey don\u2019t know what\nthey don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scott spends time sharing his knowledge by facilitating\nprofessional development with other teachers to demonstrate 21st Century\nskills; problem-based learning, equity and STEM career pathways. He inspires\nhis students to go beyond what they think they can do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to these accomplishments. He also leads the\nGreen Energy Team, which has built and entered a solar car into National\nCompetitions, as one of the only high school teams in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On June 24, Scott hosted the Epic (Electric Propulsion\nInnovation Challenge) STEM Challenge Coaches Workshop for anyone interested in\ncoaching or hosting a team for the 2022 Challenge at Raisbeck Aviation High\nSchool. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In short, McComb is the teacher that every parent wants\nmotivating their student.
