While some students will spend this summer doing odd jobs or\nhanging out with friends, 20 high-performing 11th and 12th graders from\nthroughout the country will complete an intensive eight-week U.S. Navy Summer\nFlight Academy aviation program at either Delaware State University in Dover,\nDE, or Elizabeth City State University, in Elizabeth City, NC. Upon completion\nof the program, each student will earn a private pilot certification\/license\nand five college credits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The program was established in 2021 by the Commander, Naval\nAir Forces (CNAF) to increase diversity in the field of aviation. The Navy\npartners with select universities throughout the country to provide the flight\ntraining to the participating students. The cost of the program is\napproximately $24,000\/student but is offered at zero cost to the student and\nwith no obligations. The majority of this year\u2019s CNAF Selects are from minority\ndemographic groups, with an equal male\/female split for the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Department of the Navy sponsors the Summer Flight\nAcademy program for students participating in Navy and Marine Corps Junior\nReserve Officer Training Corps. The program is a new STEM initiative that was\nselected for funding by the Naval STEM Coordination Office \u2013 located at the\nOffice of Naval Research \u2013 which oversees investments in STEM education,\noutreach and workforce initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe primary goal of the scholarship program is to expose\nexceptional minority students to a career path that currently lacks diversity,\u201d\nsays Commander Chris \u201cFrozone\u201d Williams, a Navy fighter pilot, instructor, and\nDirector of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. \u201cThese 20 students have what it\ntakes to be leaders in the field of aviation, and the Navy is honored to play a\npart in their personal and professional journey.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the eight-week Summer Flight Academy, each student\nwill receive a minimum of 32 hours of classroom aviation academics and 49 hours\nof flight training in either a Vulcanair V.10 single-engine aircraft or Piper\nWarrior (PA-28). As part of the certification process, students are required to\ncomplete 17 hours of solo flights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
