With this agreement, United\nbecame the first U.S. airline to make an international purchase agreement for\nsustainable aviation fuel (SAF).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cReducing carbon emissions from fuel use is the fastest way\nUnited will reach 100% green goal by 2050. As the leading U.S. airline\nglobally, it makes sense to accelerate our use of SAF and expand our network of\npartners internationally with a leading company like Neste,\u201d said Lauren Riley,\nUnited\u2019s Chief Sustainability Officer. \u201cThe demand from our customers to limit\ntheir emissions from flying is growing exponentially, and this agreement means\nthat United customers flying from Amsterdam will be partners in our\nsustainability efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Neste will provide United with 7,500 metric tons (2.5\nmillion gallons) of SAF in Amsterdam in the first year. United will also have\nthe right to purchase up to 60,000 metric tons (20 million gallons) in the\nsecond year, and up to 90,000 metric tons (30 million gallons) in the third\nyear, at Amsterdam or other locations that Neste can supply throughout the\nglobe, as Neste increases its SAF production globally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This supply agreement is enabled by Neste\u2019s ambitious growth\nstrategy, which will see the company producing 1.5 million tons (515 million\ngallons) of SAF per annum by the end of 2023. Neste has been producing and\ndelivering SAF since 2011 and has a proven track record of supplying SAF to\ncustomers in Europe, Asia and the Americas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re excited to be partnering with United in this\nmilestone purchase agreement and make our SAF available to United, also an\nindustry leader in SAF investments,\u201d said Thorsten Lange, Executive Vice\nPresident, Renewable Aviation at Neste. \u201cOur global, fast-growing SAF\nproduction and supply chain supports airlines and their customers in reducing\ngreenhouse gas emissions. Neste is committed to helping aviation transition to\na more sustainable future, and we look forward to expanding our cooperation\nwith United.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SAF delivers the performance of conventional jet fuel but\nwith a significantly smaller carbon footprint on a life cycle basis. Neste\u2019s\nSAF reduces life cycle greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by up to 80%* compared to\nconventional jet fuel and burns cleaner than conventional jet fuel reducing\nnon-CO2 emissions, including particulate matter (PM).
