Nearly 200 students attended the 16th Annual \u201cThe Sky\u2019s the\nLimit: Aviation Career Day\u201d event, which was presented by Van Nuys Airport\n(VNY). This annual event, which was held virtually for a second consecutive\nyear, provides a forum for local high school students to learn about the wide\nvariety of career paths available in an airport environment directly from\nengaging leaders of organizations in the dynamic aviation and aerospace\nindustries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAviation Career Day exposes students to high paying careers\nright in their backyard,\u201d said Los Angeles City Council President Nury\nMartinez, Council District 6. “I’m glad that Valley students have this\nunique opportunity to network with important industry leaders as they explore\ncareer options.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Aviation offers an endless variety of career paths,\nfrom pilots and support crews to engineers and architects, and we are proud to\nshare our passion for this work with students,” said Justin Erbacci, Chief\nExecutive Officer, Los Angeles World Airports. “The Van Nuys Airport\nAviation Career Day offers students a glimpse of working at one of the busiest\ngeneral aviation airports in the world, and we thank our partners for sharing\ntheir time and knowledge with these future leaders.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year’s event was co-hosted by City Council President\nMartinez, VNY and the Valley Economic Alliance. The program featured more than\n20 organizations, with representatives using breakout sessions to share\ninformation about their organizations, careers and personal stories. This\nyear’s program was supported by the Greater San Fernando Valley Chamber of\nCommerce and staff from SongDivision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following welcomes from Council President Martinez and CEO\nErbacci, students were able to choose between concurrent breakout sessions with\ndifferent speakers. Among the speakers were Nancy Herrera, who shared her\nprofessional journey from attending North Valley Occupational Center to\ncurrently working at JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory). On behalf of LAWA,\nstudents also heard from VNY Airport Director Flora Margheritis, who discussed\nher path started with an internship with LAWA and led to becoming director of\none of the busiest and innovative airports in the nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attending organizations included LAWA, the Los Angeles\nAirport Police Division, Los Angeles Fire Department, Aerolease\/Aeroplex, Clay\nLacy Aviation, the U.S. Navy, Sun Air Jets, the Federal Aviation Administration\nand others. Participants were also treated to a behind-the-scenes look at the\nhistory and daily operations of VNY.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
