(Military Aviation Museum photos)  <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Four flying aircraft from one of the largest flying warbird\ncollections in the world will be coming to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2022, as the\nMilitary Aviation Museum of Virginia Beach, Virginia brings World War II-era\nairplanes to participate in this year\u2019s event. The 69th annual Experimental\nAircraft Association fly-in convention is July 25-31 at Wittman Regional Airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The four airplanes \u2013 a de Havilland DH.98 Mosquito, Curtiss\nP-40 Warhawk, Goodyear FG-1D Corsair, and North American P-51 Mustang \u2013 will be\nflown to Oshkosh and exhibited in the warbirds area. Several of these aircraft\nfrom the collection will also make appearances on Boeing Plaza, with the\nschedule to be determined. The appearance is part of the museum\u2019s celebration\nof its founder, Jerry Yagen, and his aviation achievements. Yagen is scheduled\nto attend as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJerry Yagen\u2019s passion for warbird aircraft has through the\nyears evolved into one of most magnificent airworthy collections in the world,\u201d\nsaid Rick Larsen, EAA\u2019s vice president of communities and member programs, who\ncoordinates AirVenture features and attractions. \u201cTo have these airplanes as\npart of the world\u2019s largest annual gathering of warbirds that occurs at Oshkosh\nevery summer makes this year\u2019s event even more special, both in the air and on\nthe ground.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Each aircraft brings a unique story:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00c2\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; De Havilland\nDH.98 Mosquito \u2013 This airplane was sold surplus to a Canadian farmer in 1948,\nwhere it sat until a Canadian museum acquired it in 1978. The Military Aviation\nMuseum obtained it in 2004 and shipped it to New Zealand for restoration. It\nmade its first flight in 2012 and at the time was the only flying example of\nthe type in the world. The aircraft\nwas built in 1941 and sent to Great Britain as part of the lend-lease program,\nthen on to the Soviet Union, where it was lost in action and not recovered for\na half-century. The P-40 was the aircraft that established the Military\nAviation Museum collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Corsair-air-to-air-Yagen-Collection-edit.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21513\" width=\"237\" height=\"157\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Corsair-air-to-air-Yagen-Collection-edit.jpg 600w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Corsair-air-to-air-Yagen-Collection-edit-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 237px) 100vw, 237px\" \/><figcaption><em>FG-1D Corsair<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00c2\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Goodyear\nFG-1D Corsair \u2013 Delivered in May 1945, the Corsair spent much of its military\ncareer in storage, thus being one of the lowest time Corsairs known. The \u201cSkull\nand Bones\u201d livery honors a hometown hero, Norfolk, Virginia-born Ray Beacham,\nwho flew with the famous VF-17 unit in the South Pacific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00c2\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; North\nAmerican P-51D Mustang \u2013 Arguably the most iconic American fighter of WWII, the\nMustang is a testament to American ingenuity and industrial capability. The\nMustang was designed in 1940 with the first flying prototype built in just 120\ndays. The Military Aviation Museum\u2019s example was built in 1945 and wears the\nmarkings of the 353rd Fighter Group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yagen will also bring his soon-to-be-published book to\nAirVenture and speak at Warbirds in Review sessions and other venues about\nbuilding the warbird collection.
