Deputy\nAdministrator Bradley Mims will also take on an expanded role during this\ninterim period, focusing on the FAA\u2019s workforce and the nation\u2019s airports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Billy-Nolen-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21458\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Billy-Nolen-2.jpg 200w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Billy-Nolen-2-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Billy-Nolen-2-60x60.jpg 60w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption><em>Billy Nolen<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Nolen is an experienced aviation safety professional and\nformer airline captain. He has been the FAA\u2019s Associate Administrator for\nAviation Safety since January, where he has led a team of more than 7,600\nemployees who oversee all aspects of aviation safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBilly Nolen has extensive expertise in aviation and a deep\nunderstanding of the vital role the FAA plays in ensuring the safety of the\ntraveling public,\u201d said U.S Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. \u201cWe are\ngrateful to Steve for his service and to Billy and Brad for stepping up to lead\nthe FAA during this critical time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dickson announced in February that he would step down from\nhis post as administrator after leading the agency for more than two and a half\nyears. The Biden-Harris Administration is conducting a national search for a\nnominee to become the permanent FAA Administrator, a position that carries a\nfive-year term and must be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before joining the FAA, Nolen was vice president for Safety,\nSecurity and Quality for WestJet Airlines in Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to his employment at WestJet, Nolen held safety\nleadership positions at Qantas Airways, Airlines for America and American\nAirlines. He began his professional career in 1989 as a pilot for American,\nearning type ratings on Boeing 757, 767 and McDonnell Douglas MD-80 aircraft.\nHe later managed the carrier\u2019s Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP) and rose\nthrough the management ranks to become the airline\u2019s managing director for\ncorporate safety and regulatory affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2015, Nolen became senior vice president for safety,\nsecurity and operations at Airlines for America, a trade group that represents\nthe airlines. From 2018 to 2019, he served as executive manager for group\nsafety and health at Qantas. He moved to WestJet in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to his professional aviation experience, Nolen\nserved tours of duty in the U.S. Army as an airplane and helicopter pilot and\nsafety officer. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Professional Aeronautics from\nEmbry-Riddle Aeronautical University, as well as specialized aviation safety\nmanagement certificates from the University of Southern California, United\nStates Army Safety Center and the United States Navy Postgraduate School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FAA Deputy Administrator Bradley Mims brings over 40 years\nof experience in transportation and has served in leadership roles in both the\npublic and private sector.
