The college received a\n$269,000 grant from the Federal Aviation Administration to educate high\nschoolers about the wide variety of career opportunities in the aviation\nindustry, and to recruit students into ECSU\u2019s aviation program.&nbsp; The grant dollars will cover college\ncoursework, FAA exams, a drone pilot license, scholarships, and much more for the\n80 students that join the AWD Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe aviation sector is expected to face serious workforce\nshortages in the near future, and we have the opportunity to provide a\nwonderful career path for high school students,\u201d says Dr. Kuldeep Rawat, Dean\nof the ECSU School of Science, Aviation, Health, and Technology.&nbsp; \u201cWomen and African-Americans are heavily\nunderrepresented in the aviation workforce, especially aircraft pilots.&nbsp; Our program will help close the opportunity\ngap by allowing underrepresented youth to reach their full potential.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ECSU is establishing its own regional AWD academy and will\nutilize its existing partnerships with public school districts, non-profit\norganizations, and other STEM-focused outreach programs to interest high school\nstudents in aviation and aerospace careers.&nbsp;\nThe university will:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Offer a year-round structured curriculum and\nprofessional development opportunities for high school teachers including\ninstruction, hands-on activities, and experiences to increase students\u2019\nknowledge about aviation<\/li><li>Train a more diverse student population,\nhistorically underserved and underrepresented, with the intent to prepare them\nfor college and careers in aviation-related disciplines<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>High school students who participate in the AWD Program will\nreceive 90+ hours of learning by participating in aviation-related field trips,\ntaking simulated flights in ECSU\u2019s state-of-the-art flight and air traffic\ncontrol simulators, and enjoying discovery flights in trainer aircraft.&nbsp; They\u2019ll also experience life as a college\nstudent by staying on campus, using the gymnasium, library, and recreational\nfacilities, and interacting with ECSU students and personnel at all levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are a high school junior or senior who wants to\nparticipate in the program, contact Dr. Kuldeep Rawat at ksrawat@ecsu.edu. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ECSU will cover all costs related to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>6 credits of college coursework<\/li><li>FAA private pilot ground written exam<\/li><li>PART 107 Drone Pilot License<\/li><li>FAA Medical Examination<\/li><li>Weeklong College Residential experience on the\nECSU campus during the summer<\/li><li>State-of-the-art Flight simulator and discovery\nflight experiences in ECSU aircraft<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, 20 students will receive a scholarship up to\n$4,000 to pursue an Aviation or Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) degree at ECSU. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Eighty high school students will soar to new heights thanks to Elizabeth City State University\u2019s (ECSUs) new Aviation Workforce Development (AWD) Program.&nbsp;
