This event was a professional career conference (for women only) designed to introduce women to aviation and promote networking, education, and scholarships while building up the aviation community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With over 180 people in attendance, WACS awarded $32,000 in\nscholarships, quadrupling the amount given last year, and tripling the goal for\nthis year thanks to donations from over 30 sponsors. As a result, 16 women each\nreceived $2,000 to go towards aviation education and training in the categories\nof flight training, maintenance training, professional development, and engineering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"457\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/WACS-2022-Scholarship-Winners.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21118\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/WACS-2022-Scholarship-Winners.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/WACS-2022-Scholarship-Winners-300x137.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption><em>WAC Scholarship Winners<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We are grateful and honored by the generosity of our\nsponsors,\u201d said Mary Poirier, WACS CoFounder. \u201cWe are amazed at how the\naviation industry is coming together to support women in aviation.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Representatives from 25 aviation companies and schools\nvisited and spoke with attendees. The event featured roundtable discussions\nwith professional industry panelists, a resume writing and job interview\nworkshop, drone exhibits, airplane simulations, and various aircraft tours.\nSome attendees also toured Western Michigan University\u2019s College of Aviation\nand the Duncan Aviation Maintenance Facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eighty industry exhibitors participated in the event.\n&#8220;I attended the first Women&#8217;s Aviation Career Symposium at Lansing&#8217;s\nCapital Region International Airport,\u201d said Megan Turner, an exhibitor for L-3\nHarris. \u201cI can&#8217;t believe how much it has grown.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keynote speaker, Allison McKay, CEO of Women in Aviation\nInternational, spoke on the challenges facing the aviation industry,\nspecifically diversity. Citing the promotion of aviation to women as well as\nrelying on men as allies in the aviation industry, she advised women to become\ntheir own advocates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Be your own greatest cheerleader,&#8221; said McKay.\n&#8220;Whether you want to fly or fix aircraft, or work in Air Traffic Control,\nthere are so many professions in this industry that are in demand right now&#8230;whatever\nyou want to do, you can do it in aviation. It&#8217;s just a matter of finding your\nniche, your passion, and then pursuing your dream.&#8221;\n\nThe Women\u2019s Aviation Career Symposium is an\nevent designed to connect the local aviation community.
