{"id":21088,"date":"2022-02-26T15:00:39","date_gmt":"2022-02-26T15:00:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/saj.pachecostudios.com?p=21088"},"modified":"2022-02-26T15:03:27","modified_gmt":"2022-02-26T15:03:27","slug":"airport-services-director-cliff-burnette-retires-from-doav","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/index.php\/state-news\/virginia\/airport-services-director-cliff-burnette-retires-from-doav\/%20","title":{"rendered":"Airport Services Director Cliff Burnette Retires from DOAV"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Photo above &#8211; Burnette, left and DOAV Director Greg Campbell.<\/em> <br><em>Photo by Bill Dickinson, DOAV.  <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Director of the Airport Services Division of the Virginia\nDepartment of Aviation (DOAV), Cliff Burnette, has retired after 44 years of\ncontinuous service. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Burnette, who began his career with the DOAV in February\n1978, was an urban studies &amp; planning major at Virginia Commonwealth\nUniversity. He joined the DOAV in his senior year of college as an airport\nplanner within the department\u2019s Airport Services Division (ASD).&nbsp; Three years later, he was promoted to air\nservice development officer.&nbsp; In 1986,\nCliff was promoted to manager of the planning and environmental section of the\nASD, a position he held until 2004.&nbsp; That\nyear, he became the director of the ASD. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cliff-Burnette-25-and-Kristi-edit.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21090\" width=\"337\" height=\"228\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cliff-Burnette-25-and-Kristi-edit.jpg 700w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cliff-Burnette-25-and-Kristi-edit-300x204.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 337px) 100vw, 337px\" \/><figcaption><em>Cliff and Kristi Burnette.<\/em><br><em>Photo b<\/em>y <em>Bill Dickinson, DOAV.<\/em> <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>During his tenure as division director, Cliff has overseen\n7,500 projects worth more than $400 million at the 66 public-use airports in\nVirginia.&nbsp; The projects include\nconstruction, engineering, planning, environmental services, navigational aids,\naviation security and airport maintenance programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2018, Cliff earned the National Association of State\nAviation Officials\u2019 (NASAO) State Aviation Distinguished Service Award for his\ncontributions to the field of aviation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While he worked his entire adult life at the DOAV, he also answered\nthe call of duty and simultaneously served in the U.S. Naval Reserve, rising to\nthe rank of captain before retiring in 2014 after 26 years of service.&nbsp; A highly decorated officer, Cliff earned 18\nmilitary service awards including the Legion of Merit, the Joint Meritorious\nService Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Iraq Campaign\nMedal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to his bachelor\u2019s degree, Cliff earned a\nmaster\u2019s degree in public administration from VCU.&nbsp; He is a lifetime member of Corinth United\nMethodist Church in Sandston, and is a former member of the board of directors\nfor the Chickahominy YMCA.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Photo above &#8211; Burnette, left and DOAV Director Greg Campbell.
