The 42 new&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/lnks.gd\/l\/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMDQsInVyaSI6ImJwMjpjbGljayIsImJ1bGxldGluX2lkIjoiMjAyMjAxMTMuNTE3NDY0NjEiLCJ1cmwiOiJodHRwczovL3d3dy55b3V0dWJlLmNvbS93YXRjaD92PU00dnVKS0N3T2R3In0.VNjcgmt1XTE5PwPcK9SXr3EQ8jdXYuaCp7FKgfCvwMQ\/s\/60165727\/br\/124839577132-l\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Optimized Profile Descents<\/a>&nbsp;(OPDs)\nallow planes to glide down safely from cruising altitudes into airspace for\nsome of the nation\u2019s largest airports instead of the fuel-consuming stair-step\nprocedure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese new efficient descent procedures both save fuel and dramatically reduce emissions, moving us closer to our goal of net-zero aviation emissions by 2050,\u201d\u00c2\u00a0U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For each group of descents used at an airport, the FAA estimates\nthat an average 2 million gallons of fuel is saved and 40 million pounds of\nemissions reduced annually. That is equivalent to eliminating the fuel and CO2\nemissions of 1,300 Boeing 737 flights from Atlanta to Dallas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen we multiply the impact by thousands of flights, we gain real fuel savings and real environmental benefits,\u201d\u00c2\u00a0FAA Administrator Steve Dickson\u00c2\u00a0said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2021, the FAA implemented OPDs for Dallas-Ft. Worth\nInternational Airport, Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, Harry\nReid International Airport in Las Vegas, Lakehurst Maxfield Field in New\nJersey, Love Field in Dallas, Miami International Airport, North Las Vegas\nAirport, Orlando International Airport, Port Columbus International Airport, Portland\nInternational Jetport, Tampa International Airport and numerous mid-size\nairports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"173\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/profile-descent.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20664\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/profile-descent.jpg 500w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/profile-descent-300x104.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br>\nUnder traditional staircase descent procedures, aircraft repeatedly level off\nand power up the engines. This burns more fuel and requires air traffic\ncontrollers to issue instructions at each step. With optimized descents,\naircraft descend from cruising altitude to the runway in a smooth, continuous\npath with the engines set at near idle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2014, the FAA also has developed OPD procedures at airports\nin Atlanta, Charlotte, Cleveland, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Northern\nCalifornia, Southern California and Washington, D.C. More OPD procedures will\nbe added in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FAA employs a growing number of new flight procedures that use\nless fuel and reduce noise. These include NextGen initiatives such as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/lnks.gd\/l\/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMDUsInVyaSI6ImJwMjpjbGljayIsImJ1bGxldGluX2lkIjoiMjAyMjAxMTMuNTE3NDY0NjEiLCJ1cmwiOiJodHRwczovL3d3dy5mYWEuZ292L2Fib3V0L29mZmljZV9vcmcvaGVhZHF1YXJ0ZXJzX29mZmljZXMvYXZzL29mZmljZXMvYWZ4L2Fmcy9hZnM0MDAvYWZzNDEwL3BibiJ9.UcKi6n5OGQtC8YPlLRMfRjCvK5gg3PB0G5yVGBf2zVE\/s\/60165727\/br\/124839577132-l\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Performance-Based Navigation (PBN)<\/a>.\nThese procedures bring more precision to routes and result in less fuel burn\nand reductions in CO2 greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In November, the U.S. released its first-ever comprehensive&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/lnks.gd\/l\/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMDYsInVyaSI6ImJwMjpjbGljayIsImJ1bGxldGluX2lkIjoiMjAyMjAxMTMuNTE3NDY0NjEiLCJ1cmwiOiJodHRwczovL3d3dy5mYWEuZ292L3NpdGVzL2ZhYS5nb3YvZmlsZXMvMjAyMS0xMS9BdmlhdGlvbl9DbGltYXRlX0FjdGlvbl9QbGFuLnBkZiJ9.wE5k30IBzRZvJyhvbvb_sR-bua1gYKuyzAKjBXlEu0E\/s\/60165727\/br\/124839577132-l\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Aviation Climate Action Plan<\/a>&nbsp;to\nachieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
