Last week, the University of Texas at San Antonio\u2019s (UTSA)\nnewly named Margie and Bill Klesse College of Engineering and Integrated Design\n(Klesse College) unveiled a gift from the Dee Howard Education Fund and The Dee\nHoward Foundation. A Dee Howard XR Learjet replica model is now proudly\ndisplayed in the lobby area of the Engineering Building\u2019s first floor. Located\ndirectly outside of Dr. Christopher Combs\u2019 lab, the Howard XR Learjet replica\nis both a tribute to the past of San Antonio\u2019s aviation industry and an\nopportunity to inspire future leaders in the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An unveiling ceremony was held on Tuesday, December 7, and\nsaw remarks from Dee Howard Education Fund Chair Wayne Fagan, Klesse College\nDean JoAnn Browning, Mechanical Engineering Interim Department Chair Ender\nFinol and Dee Howard Endowed Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering\nChristopher Combs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The gift from the Dee Howard Education Fund and The Dee\nHoward Foundation is the latest demonstration of the organizations\u2019 commitment\nto supporting aerospace education in the San Antonio area and maintaining the\nstrength of San Antonio\u2019s aviation and automotive industries. Named in honor of\nthe late aviation pioneer and entrepreneur Dee Howard, the Foundation, Wayne\nand Julie Fagan, and Dee\u2019s family have been long term supporters of Klesse\nCollege\u2019s academic programs and have simultaneously worked with local Pre-K\nthrough 12 educators to increase exposure to and opportunities for STEM\neducation particularly focused on underserved students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDee was known for cutting edge innovations and integrity,\u201d\nsaid Wayne Fagan. \u201cComing from a humble background himself he loved to give\nemployees of a similar background, women and people of color a helping hand to\nadvance their careers. Dee Ann and I are honored and grateful to Dr. Browning\nand the entire team at the Klesse College for the opportunity to partner with\nthem and their students in carrying on Dee\u2019s legacy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Howard XR Learjet model is proudly displayed inside the Engineering Building on UTSA\u2019s Main Campus. <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Designed and built in San Antonio, the Howard XR (Extended\nRange) modification for the Learjet improved the aircraft\u2019s efficiency by 23%\nby achieving maximum aircraft range at mach 0.80 cruising speed at a time when\nfew aircrafts could attain such performance. Dee\u2019s company, The Dee Howard Co.\n(DHC) was founded in 1964 and employed a workforce of more than 1,500\n(including over 350 employees in engineering) by the late eighties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
