The American Airlines CR Smith Museum was awarded the 2021\nMillion Women Mentors \u2014 Texas Stand Up for STEM Educational Organization award.\nThe award recognizes the museum\u2019s commitment to empowering young girls to\npursue STEM careers through educational programs. According to the United\nStates Census Bureau, women made up nearly half of the U.S. workforce in 2019,\nbut only 27% of STEM professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA lot of research has demonstrated that girls, and\nespecially girls from underserved communities, have low perception of\nself-efficacy in STEM, meaning they don\u2019t believe they can pursue a career in a\nSTEM-related field,\u201d said Marie Eve Poirier-Harris, the museum\u2019s director of\neducation. \u201cThe reasons why include a lack of visible female role models in\nSTEM careers, limited resources at school and home, and contact with negative stereotypes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exposing girls to STEM careers through targeted educational\nprogramming has been a focus of the museum since 2017, ranging from all-girl\none-day workshops to weeklong camps. Girls from around the Dallas-Fort Worth\narea have participated in hands-on activities and heard from women in various\naviation STEM professions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To evaluate the effectiveness of the museum\u2019s programming,\nPoirier-Harris conducted a study of a weeklong girls program in 2019. The\nresult was a 206% increase in interest among participants in STEM careers\npost-camp program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe results from the study clearly demonstrated the\neffectiveness of our program,\u201d Poirier-Harris said. \u201cThe girls\u2019 perception of\nwho could be a STEM professional changed dramatically after concluding the program,\nincluding the gender and race of the individual. Their experiences gave them\nthe confidence to see themselves in a STEM career.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poirier-Harris was also recognized by the Texas Girls\nCollaborative Project, receiving an award for her work as an educator at the\nmuseum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have seen firsthand that our work can change lives,\u201d she\nsaid. \u201cWe\u2019re always trying new approaches to expand the impact in our community\nand make a difference for kids of all backgrounds. It\u2019s why we do what we do,\nand we\u2019re just getting started.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like many organizations, the museum was forced to pivot its\nprogramming approach due the COVID-19 pandemic. Curriculum was converted into\nvirtual formats, allowing the museum to reach kids who previously wouldn\u2019t have\nhad the chance to participate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2022, the museum will continue to innovate with ambitious\nplans for educational and networking opportunities targeting kids grades K-12\nin the Metroplex.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
