Bolden Jr.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>First as a Marine Corps Major General and then as NASA\nAdministrator, Charles F. Bolden Jr. has dedicated his life to the service of\nthe U.S., working to secure our nation\u2019s security, prosperity, and guiding\nefforts to explore our universe as well as to understand our fragile planet\nbetter. In 2009, President Barack Obama appointed Bolden to be the 12th NASA\nAdministrator, making him only the second astronaut to hold that position.\nBolden led the development of the Space Launch System and the Orion Crew\nCapsule. He also oversaw the shift toward commercial space initiatives handling\nresupply of the ISS. He created NASA\u2019s Space Technology Mission Directorate,\nresponsible for developing the technology that will make future exploration\nmissions successful. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bolden\u2019s tenure included the triumph of the Mars Curiosity\nRover landing, the success of the Juno mission that is helping us understand\nthe planet Jupiter more completely, increasing the number of satellites tasked\nwith Earth observation tasks, and continuing progress toward the expected 2020\nlaunch of the James Webb Space Telescope. Not forgetting that the first \u201cA\u201d in\nNASA stands for Aeronautics, Bolden also focused his attention on NASA\u2019s\naeronautics programs and the agency\u2019s goal of developing airplanes that can\ntravel faster, farther, quieter and greener than ever before. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His past honors include the Defense Distinguished Service\nMedal, the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air\nMedal, three NASA Exceptional Service Medals and four NASA Space Flight Medals.\nHe received the Rotary National Space Trophy in 2014 and holds Honorary\nDoctorate degrees from numerous institutions of higher education. He was\ninducted into the U.S Astronaut Hall of Fame in 2006 and the National Aviation\nHall of Fame in 2016.
