Chesley B. \u201cSully\u201d Sullenberger III to\nserve as U.S. ambassador to the Council of the International Civil Aviation\nOrganization (ICAO). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Sullyedit.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20225\" width=\"176\" height=\"217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Sullyedit.png 527w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Sullyedit-243x300.png 243w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 176px) 100vw, 176px\" \/><figcaption><em>Chesley B. &#8220;Sully&#8221; Sullenberger<\/em><br><em>Purdue University Photo<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Recognizing the retired airline captain\u2019s longtime support\nof business aviation, NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen noted that Captain\nSullenberger is one of the preeminent aviation figures of our time, someone\nwhose name is synonymous with aviation safety and leadership. \u201cHe will be an\nexceptional U.S. Representative to ICAO, and we look forward to working closely\nwith him in the months and years ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ICAO Council is a permanent body composed of 36 member\nstates, carrying out executive functions of the ICAO Assembly, administering\nair transport, air navigation, technical cooperation and other functions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) President\nand CEO, Pete Bunce said ICAO plays an essential role in advancing\ninternational aviation safety and cooperation, environmental sustainability and\nglobal interoperability of aviation products that will shape the future of the\nindustry. \u201cAs a military and civil aviator, Ambassador Sullenberger has decades\nof experience with aerospace technological innovation and knows the vital role\nthese advancements play in making global aviation safer as well as aircraft and\nairspace operations more efficient.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At its 2017 convention, NBAA recognized Sullenberger with\nits American Spirit Award. He also served as a keynote speaker at the\nassociation\u2019s 2015 convention, detailing for attendees his \u201cMiracle on the\nHudson\u201d water landing of a US Airways Airbus 320-200 in New York City\u2019s Hudson\nRiver on Jan. 15, 2009, after multiple bird strikes disabled both engines.\nFamously, Sullenberger, first officer Jeffrey Skiles, and the cabin crew\nensured the survival of all 155 passengers and crew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With over 20,000 flight hours, Sullenberger advanced safety\nas a mentor pilot and accident investigator long before the 2009 incident. A\ngraduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, he served as a fighter pilot for the\nU.S. Air Force from 1975 to 1980.
