Photos by Kim Stevens.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The 42<sup>nd<\/sup> Virginia Aviation Hall of Fame Banquet\nwas held on Saturday with a reception and induction ceremony honoring former executive\ndirector of the Virginia Department of Aviation (DOAV), Randall P. Burdette, retired\nastronaut Leland Devon Melvin and U2 pilot Francis Gary Powers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Aviation Hall of Fame, created to honor Virginians who\nhave made significant contributions to the development of aviation, was held on\nthe Shannon Airport Campus which includes the Shannon Air Museum, in\nFredericksburg, Virginia. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Burdette was appointed to head the DOAV by Governor Mark\nWarner in 2004 and led the agency for nearly 14 years, serving under three subsequent\ngovernors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTonight, I get to be the guy that accepts this recognition\nfor the accomplishments of the team,\u201d said Burdette. \u201cI call our team, Virginia\nAviation.\u201d &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_7494.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19998\" width=\"270\" height=\"196\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_7494.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_7494-300x218.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 270px) 100vw, 270px\" \/><figcaption><em>Pat and Charlie Lamb &#8211; Mr. Lamb was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2014 and is the founder of Delta Consultants &#8211; a co-sponsor of the event. <\/em> <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Together, Burdette said they were able to accomplish many\nthings other states could not imagine. \u201cCommunications, mutual support, the\nmetal to take on a challenge, and the willingness to dream and create a vision\nfor Virginia Aviation. These are the things that allowed us, no \u2013 required us\nto lead the nation in so many areas,\u201d said Burdette. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The vision created is \u2013 <em>We will make the Virginia Aviation\nSystem the model air transportation system, providing Virginia communities economic\ndevelopment opportunities, and convenient access to the National Air Transportation\nSystem and DOAV will be the standard of excellence amongst State Aviation Agencies.\n&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Burdette had a 26-year Army career which included flying\nHueys, Chinooks and Cobra helicopters, served in the office of the US Army\nInspector General in the Pentagon and as a faculty member in the area of\nProgram Management at the Defense Acquisition University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_7532-edit-856x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19999\" width=\"201\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_7532-edit-856x1024.jpg 856w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_7532-edit-251x300.jpg 251w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_7532-edit.jpg 1224w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/><figcaption><em>Randy and Linda Burdette<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Aside from his Army aviation career, he has owned and flown\na Cessna 172, two Cessna 206\u2019s, a Cardinal RG and currently a Cessna 182. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Virginia Aviation Hall of Fame is one of many programs\ncreated by the Virginia Aeronautical Historical Society (VAHS), which was\nlaunched in 1977 by a group of dedicated Virginia citizens. Other programs\ninclude the Historical Marker Project, the Earle H.
