The sold-out event which featured keynote\nspeaker Astronaut Mary Wallace \u201cWally\u201d Funk was presented by the Oklahoma\nAeronautics Commission (OAC), in partnership with the Oklahoma Airport\nOperators Association (OAOA), AAR Corporation, Omni Air Transport, Oklahoma\nDepartment of Commerce, and the Oklahoma Chapter of Ninety-Nines (99s).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Wally-funk-1024x1004.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19938\" width=\"250\" height=\"244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Wally-funk-1024x1004.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Wally-funk-300x294.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Wally-funk-60x60.jpg 60w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Wally-funk.jpg 1100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption><em>Wally Funk poses with future aviators. Photos by Bryan Dahlvang <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>American aviator and space tourist Wally Funk was the\nfirst female air safety investigator for the National Transportation Safety\nBoard, the first female civilian flight instructor at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and\nthe first female Federal Aviation Agency inspector, as well as one of the\nMercury 13. Funk became the oldest woman to go to space on July 20, 2021, at\nage 82, as part of Blue Origin\u2019s New Shepard spacecraft during its suborbital\nflight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The history of Oklahoma Women in Aviation and Aerospace\nDay began in 2017 when the Oklahoma legislature passed Senate Bill 230 to\nofficially recognize the contribution of Oklahoma women in the state\u2019s aviation\nand aerospace industry annually on Dec. 9. Former Governor Mary Fallin signed\nthe bill into law going into effect Nov. 1 that same year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joining Wally Funk to celebrate the contributions of women to aviation and aerospace was Governor Kevin Stitt, Mayor David Holt, and Commander John Herrington. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe could not be more thrilled to welcome Wally Funk, 99s from around the U.S., and many other aviation leaders to our great state to celebrate the contributions of women throughout history in the aviation industry,\u201d Event Chair Sandra Shelton said. \u201cToday, women are represented in all sectors of our industry from commercial airports to military installations and our event is dedicated to recognizing these achievements and paving the way for future innovations led by women in the field.\u201d\u00c2\u00a0 Check out photos on FB. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/OKWIAADay\/\">https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/OKWIAADay\/<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The annual Oklahoma Women in Aviation &amp; Aerospace Day\nprovides an opportunity for individuals to learn more about how Oklahomans may\nadvocate on behalf of aviation and aerospace for young girls and women to\npursue aviation. As Oklahoma&#8217;s second largest and fastest-growing industry,\naviation has a significant impact on the lives of our citizens.
