{"id":19745,"date":"2021-10-18T20:45:23","date_gmt":"2021-10-18T20:45:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/saj.pachecostudios.com?p=19745"},"modified":"2021-10-18T20:45:26","modified_gmt":"2021-10-18T20:45:26","slug":"senior-burlington-cap-squadron-promotes-experienced-pilot-usaf-veteran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/index.php\/state-news\/vermont\/senior-burlington-cap-squadron-promotes-experienced-pilot-usaf-veteran\/%20","title":{"rendered":"Senior Burlington CAP Squadron Promotes Experienced Pilot, USAF Veteran"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Burlington Senior Squadron VT-002, for volunteers 19 and\nup, of the Vermont Wing of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP), announced the promotion of\nSenior Member Anthony \u201cTony\u201d Derderian to the rank of 1st Lieutenant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Anthony-Derderian-CAP-edit.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19746\" width=\"180\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Anthony-Derderian-CAP-edit.jpg 400w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Anthony-Derderian-CAP-edit-221x300.jpg 221w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 180px) 100vw, 180px\" \/><figcaption><em>Anthony \u201cTony\u201d Derderian<\/em><br><em>Photo &#8211; Vermont Wing, CAP <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c1st Lt Derderian\u2019s promotion is a recognition of his\ncommitment to the Civil Air Patrol since his teen years, valued service to our\nnation as well as an extensive career in military, commercial and general\naviation,\u201d said 1st Lt Vincent Gonillo, commander of the Burlington Senior\nSquadron. \u201c1st Lt Derderian\u2019s passion for aviation, service, and his ongoing\ncareer in CAP has already brought a great deal to the performance and ambition\nof our squadron, and the Wing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1st Lt Derderian joined CAP in 1976 as a middle school\nstudent, in the cadet program of the New Britain (CT) Cadet Squadron.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cAfter my first\norientation flight, said Lt Derderian, \u201cI was hooked on flying. After\nprogressing through the cadet ranks and earning the Amelia Earhart award, I\nreceived a solo scholarship and went on to earn my private pilot&#8217;s license at\n17. CAP continued to expose me to other aviation interests, including gliders\nand seaplanes which I continue to fly to this day.\u201d All CAP cadets receive five\norientation flights in powered aircraft and gliders, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Derderian continued: \u201cAfter my enlistment in the USAF and\nseveral years as a crew member in the E3A AWACS, I used my GI Bill to finish\ncollege while I worked as a flight instructor, flew skydivers, towed banners,\nand charter flights. I was hired at Business Express, Delta Commuter and a few\nyears later UPS, where I have been for over thirty years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1st Lt Derderian has accrued over 17,000 flight hours in\nnumerous airframes, including the B-727, B-747, B-757, B-767, A-300 and\ncurrently the MD-11.&nbsp; He plans for his\nsecond CAP career include gaining certification as a CAP mission pilot,\nproviding orientation flights for cadets, and conducting aerospace education\nprogramming for his fellow Vermonters and CAP colleagues.
