{"id":19734,"date":"2021-10-17T13:39:38","date_gmt":"2021-10-17T13:39:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/saj.pachecostudios.com?p=19734"},"modified":"2021-10-17T13:39:39","modified_gmt":"2021-10-17T13:39:39","slug":"nbaa-honors-aviation-safety-advocate-robert-sumwalt-with-silk-scarf-award-at-nbaa-bace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/index.php\/national-news\/nbaa-honors-aviation-safety-advocate-robert-sumwalt-with-silk-scarf-award-at-nbaa-bace\/%20","title":{"rendered":"NBAA Honors Aviation Safety Advocate Robert Sumwalt with Silk Scarf Award at NBAA-BACE"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In recognition of his lifelong commitment to aviation\nsafety, the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) has honored Robert\nSumwalt, former chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB),\nwith the association\u2019s Silk Scarf Award at NBAA\u2019s Business Aviation Convention\n&amp; Exhibition (NBAA-BACE) in Las Vegas, NV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"201\" height=\"251\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Robert-Sumwalt.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19735\"\/><figcaption><em>Robert Sumwalt<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Sumwalt served as a board member at the NTSB from 2006 \u2013\n2021 and was nominated by President Donald Trump in 2017 to serve as the 14th\nchairman of the NTSB. Before joining the board, Sumwalt was a pilot for 32\nyears and has accumulated more than 14,000 flight hours, including more than\ntwo decades flying for commercial airlines, as well as business aviation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThroughout his extensive career, Robert has been a fierce\nadvocate for improving safety across all modes of transportation,\u201d said NBAA\nPresident and CEO Ed Bolen. \u201cBusiness aviation has benefitted tremendously from\nhis work, and I am honored to bestow NBAA\u2019s Silk Scarf Award to Robert in\nappreciation of his contributions to our industry and to aviation safety\nworldwide.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sumwalt, a former member of the NBAA Safety Committee, has\nwritten extensively on aviation safety matters, publishing more than 100\narticles on transportation safety and aircraft accident investigation and\nco-authoring the book Aircraft Accident Analysis: Final Reports. He also served\nas a consultant to NASA\u2019s Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS) for eight\nyears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of\nSouth Carolina and a Master of Aeronautical Science (with distinction) from\nEmbry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU), with concentrations in\naviation\/aerospace safety systems and human factors aviation systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sumwalt also received an honorary Doctor of Science degree\nfrom the University of South Carolina, and an honorary doctorate from ERAU.
