Department of Transportation and others will be\nhosting Elon Drone Day on Nov. 8.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elon Drone Day will be a daylong program held in the Turner\nTheatre and Dwight C. Schar Hall, located in the School of Communications. The\nprogram is aimed at answering questions regarding regulations, safety and\noverall use and other trends in the drone industry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cElon Drone Day aims to provide a platform to help share\nknowledge within the drone community on how to fly safely by following the\nFederal Aviation Administration guidelines,\u201d said Senior Lecturer Randy Piland,\nwho has promoted drones and related safety regulations for the past five years\nand is organizing the event. \u201cElon is a perfect place to discuss drone industry\nuse openly,\u201d he added, noting the university\u2019s journalism and cinema programs,\nas well as other disciplines such as engineering, earth sciences and computer\nprogramming. \u201cThis event is open to anyone curious about how to consider drone\nuse in their professions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program will feature conversations with FAA safety\nofficials, NCDOT aviation leaders, drone delivery specialists, video\nstorytellers and other experts. In addition to onsite panels and lectures,\nthere will be displays and activities for those in attendance, with a drone\ndemonstration in the afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Piland said NCDOT has been a great partner in organizing the\nday\u2019s programming and activities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNCDOT is committed to innovation and prioritizing safety,\nand the use of drones has greatly improved our methods for serving the citizens\nof our state,\u201d said T.C. Freeman, an aviation safety specialist with the\ndepartment\u2019s Division of Aviation. \u201cEvents and programs like this are a boon\nfor the leaders of the next generation and a great way to help us ensure people\nare operating drones safely and responsibly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event is free and open to recreational and commercial\npilots, educators, students and other members of the community interested in\nunmanned aircraft systems.
