Members of the community joined state and local\nofficials last week for the airport\u2019s ribbon cutting ceremony and even got the\nopportunity to cruise the newly paved and lengthened runway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Marty-Blake-edit.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19608\" width=\"220\" height=\"289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Marty-Blake-edit.jpg 623w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Marty-Blake-edit-228x300.jpg 228w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 220px) 100vw, 220px\" \/><figcaption><em>Marty Blake<\/em> <br><em> Photo courtesy of Ferdinand News<\/em>  <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The project included the expansion of their runway from\n5,000 feet long to 5,501 feet long and from 75 feet wide to 100 feet wide. The runway\nlengthening also included Indiana\u2019s first tunnel in a public airport for cars\nto pass through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe extension and widening of Runway 9\/27 at Huntingburg\nAirport is the most important infrastructure project in the southwest region of\nIndiana in 2021,\u201d said Marty Blake, Manager of the INDOT Office of Aviation.\n\u201cThis project was the first of its kind in the State of Indiana where a local\nroad was tunneled for a runway.\u201d&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Blake said the partnerships between local, state, and\nfederal officials were critical in keeping the project on track during the\nchallenges posed by the COVID pandemic. \u201cEven though the road being closed was\na county road, INDOT has tunnel and bridge oversight for projects of this\nmagnitude.&nbsp; Airport users can now fully\nload their aircraft with fuel purchased at Huntingburg, flying non-stop to\ntheir destination due to the increased runway length provided by this\nextension.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/unnamed-edit-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19611\" width=\"284\" height=\"215\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/unnamed-edit-2.jpg 500w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/unnamed-edit-2-300x227.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 284px) 100vw, 284px\" \/><figcaption>F<em>r. Photo courtesy of Ferdinand News.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Airport Manager Travis McQueen said the completion of the\nproject has had an immediate impact, noting that a Falcon 20 used the airfield.\nThe Airport Authority owns and operates the FBO, noted McQueen, which gives\nthem immediate feedback on fuel sales. \u201cIt\u2019s encouraging.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The longer runway will also benefit businesses with based aircraft,\nallowing them to take on more fuel and have greater options when considering their\nfleet mix.
