{"id":19514,"date":"2021-09-27T17:02:58","date_gmt":"2021-09-27T17:02:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/saj.pachecostudios.com?p=19514"},"modified":"2021-09-27T17:58:33","modified_gmt":"2021-09-27T17:58:33","slug":"douglas-c-47-placid-lassie-wwii-combat-veteran-of-d-day-and-market-garden-to-offer-cockpit-tours-at-warbirds-over-the-beach-air-show","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/index.php\/national-news\/douglas-c-47-placid-lassie-wwii-combat-veteran-of-d-day-and-market-garden-to-offer-cockpit-tours-at-warbirds-over-the-beach-air-show\/%20","title":{"rendered":"Douglas C-47 \u201cPlacid Lassie,\u201d WWII Combat Veteran of D-Day and Market Garden, to offer cockpit tours at Warbirds Over the Beach Air Show"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Military Aviation Museum Tunison Foundation&#8217;s C-47\n\u201cPlacid Lassie,\u201d which towed gliders over Normandy, France on D-Day, dropped\nparatroopers in Operation Market Garden and resupplied the besieged city of\nBastogne during the Battle of the Bulge, will be attending their Warbirds Over\nthe Beach Air Show, October 2nd &amp; 3rd, 2021.&nbsp; This historic aircraft will be open for air\nshow attendees to climb aboard and tour with the crew members of the Tunison\nFoundation, D-Day Squadron and DC-3 Society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This C-47 also has the distinction of being the lead\naircraft of the D-Day Squadron, a fleet of 15 C-47\u2019s and DC-3\u2019s, who flew from\nthe United States to Normandy, France to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of\nD-Day in 2019. The airplane is being brought to Warbirds Over the Beach with\nthe generous support of Delegate Barry Knight. Knight has been a long-time\nsupporter of the Military Aviation Museum and of Warbirds Over the Beach, one\nof the nation\u2019s largest all-warbird air shows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The museum has also announced a WWII Sherman Tank, from the\nWheels of Liberation Organization will join the festivities as part of the\nLiving History encampment at the event.&nbsp;\nThe museum\u2019s collection of ultra-rare WWI biplanes and triplanes, and\nWWII fighters, bombers, amphibians, and trainers, will entertain the entire\nfamily over the two-day air show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Museum Director, Keegan Chetwynd explains, \u201cAircraft like\nPlacid Lassie bring a piece of important American history to every community\nthey visit. You can climb in the airplane, you can stand where the paratroopers\nstood before jumping out to begin the liberation of Europe, it\u2019s a special way\nto connect with and visit our history even for those who can\u2019t travel to\nNormandy to visit the beaches.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tunison Foundation President, Eric Zipkin, who piloted the\nC-47 during the 75th Anniversary of D-Day said, \u201cPlacid Lassie is an education\ntool and living history aircraft that inspires and motivates all people, young\nand old.
