The FAA has awarded more than 64 grants totaling $257.4\nmillion to Alaska airports during fiscal year 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Alaska-airport.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19497\" width=\"310\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Alaska-airport.jpg 600w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Alaska-airport-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 310px) 100vw, 310px\" \/><figcaption><em>Airport of Haines, Alaska, USA.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese grants reflect our ongoing commitment to the unique\nneeds of Alaska aviation community and our focus on supporting the extensive\nAlaska National Airspace System,\u201d said FAA Administrator Steve Dickson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aviation provides the backbone of daily commerce to many\ncommunities in the state, including the delivery of food and life-saving\nsupplies, inter-city and inter-village transportation, emergency medical evacuations\nand daily commuting. Approximately 82 percent of communities in Alaska are only\naccessible by air. Many of these communities are home to Alaska natives, which\nrepresent nearly 20 percent of the state\u2019s population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/TELLER-Arlando.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19498\" width=\"130\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/TELLER-Arlando.jpg 350w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/TELLER-Arlando-208x300.jpg 208w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 130px) 100vw, 130px\" \/><figcaption><em>Arlando Teller <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTransportation connectivity is paramount to reach\ncommunities throughout our great nation. These grants are key to achieve that\ngoal,\u201d said Arlando Teller, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Tribal Affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The projects announced today will not have to pay the usual\nlocal match thanks to nearly $100 million in President Biden\u2019s American Rescue\nPlan Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today\u2019s grants include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bethel Census Area<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Bethel Airport in Bethel, Alaska: an additional\n$6.0 million to the $34.3 million announced in August to replace the airport\nlighting vault, reconstruct airfield guidance signs, strengthen Runway 01L\/19R,\nrehabilitate the taxiway, and purchase snow removal equipment and an emergency\ngenerator.<\/li><li>Chefornak Airport in Chefornak, Alaska: $6.6\nmillion to rehabilitate the access road to the airport, the airport\u2019s runway\nand the apron area where planes park.<\/li><li>Kipnuk Airport, Kipnuk, Alaska: $18.9 million\nfor improvements to navigational aids, which include installing new aids as\nwell as the reconstruction of the airport beacon and taxiway lighting. In\naddition, the airport will use grant funding to widen the runway and\nrehabilitate the taxiway and apron where planes park.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Kenai Peninsula Borough<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Kenai Municipal Airport, Kenai, Alaska: $506,500\nto construct, extend and improve the airport safety area.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Matanuska-Susitna Borough<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Warren &#8220;Bud&#8221; Woods Palmer Municipal\nAirport, Palmer, Alaska: $526,000 to improve airport drainage and erosion\ncontrol for the taxiway.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>North Slope Borough<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Atqasuk Edward Burnell Sr. Memorial Airport,\nAtqasuk, Alaska: add an additional $3.1 million to the $20.7 million announced\nin August to install navigational aids, including apron edge lights and flood\nlighting, reconstruct runway and taxiway lighting, replace the airport lighting\nvault, install additional perimeter fencing, and rehabilitate the airport\u2019s\nrunway, taxiway, and apron where planes park. Atqasuk, a remote community in\nnorthern Alaska, is solely dependent on aviation for the transportation of\npeople, goods, and critical services. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Prince of Wales-Hyder Census Area<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Metlakatla Airport, Metlakatla, Alaska: $6.5\nmillion to repair the seaplane base so it can be used to safely transport goods\nand services to remote communities in Alaska, including the Metlakatla Indian\nCommunity on Annette Island in southern Alaska. The funding is from the sixth\nround of fiscal year 2021 Airport Improvement Program grants. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Airport Improvement Program receives approximately $3.2\nbillion in funding each year.
