{"id":19404,"date":"2021-09-14T00:08:49","date_gmt":"2021-09-14T00:08:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/saj.pachecostudios.com?p=19404"},"modified":"2021-09-14T00:08:50","modified_gmt":"2021-09-14T00:08:50","slug":"u-s-airlines-announce-3-billion-gallon-sustainable-aviation-fuel-production-goal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/index.php\/national-news\/u-s-airlines-announce-3-billion-gallon-sustainable-aviation-fuel-production-goal\/%20","title":{"rendered":"U.S. Airlines Announce 3-Billion-Gallon Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production Goal"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Airlines for America (A4A) announced that their member\ncarriers have pledged to work with government leaders and other stakeholders to\nmake 3 billion gallons of cost-competitive sustainable aviation fuel (SAF)\navailable to U.S. aircraft operators in 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In March, as part of a commitment to work across the\naviation industry to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, A4A members\npledged to work toward a rapid expansion of the production and deployment of\ncommercially viable SAF to make 2 billion gallons available in 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are proud of our record on climate change, but we know\nthe climate change challenge has only continued to intensify. Accordingly, A4A\nmember carriers have embraced the need to take even bolder, more significant\nsteps to address the climate crisis,\u201d Airlines for America President and CEO\nNicholas E. Calio said at a White House roundtable on sustainable aviation.\n\u201cToday, I am pleased to announce that we are increasing our SAF \u2018challenge\ngoal\u2019 by an additional 50 percent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Calio highlighted the need for positive government policy\nsupport \u2013 including a $1.50-$2.00 per gallon SAF blender\u2019s tax credit;\npublic-private SAF research, development and deployment programs, such as a new\nSAF and low emissions technology grant program under consideration by Congress;\nand other collaborative initiatives \u2013 to help enable the U.S. aviation industry\nto reach its ambitious new 2030 SAF goal and its 2050 net-zero emissions goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo get there, we must work together \u2013 industry and\ngovernment,\u201d he said. \u201cThese goals are important, but they are meaningless\nwithout action. A4A and our members are taking and are committed to action, and\nwe are committed to working together, across this industry and with Congress\nand the Administration, to make these goals a reality.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to the COVID-19 crisis, U.S. airlines were\ntransporting a record 2.5 million passengers and 58,000 tons of cargo per day\nwhile contributing less than 2 percent of the nation\u2019s carbon emissions. For\ndecades, U.S. passenger and cargo carriers have been investing in increasingly\nfuel-efficient aircraft and operating them in more efficient ways, improving\noverall fuel efficiency by more than 135 percent year-end 2019, saving over 5\nbillion metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) \u2013 equivalent to taking more than 27\nmillion cars off the road on average in each of those years.
