Senior Federal Air Marshal Ken Meisel contracted COVID-19\nwhile assigned to critical antiterrorism missions aboard US aircraft. He became\ngravely ill during treatment, and ultimately succumbed to the virus on\nSeptember 24, 2020. Ken embodied the spirit of service and sacrifice, and he\nwill be sorely missed by his friends, family, and co-workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After Ken\u2019s passing, his family faced complex requirements\nand a short 30-day deadline to submit the Department of Labor Office of Workers\nCompensation death claim. Unrealistic deadlines often result in automatic claim\ndenials, triggering lengthy, costly, and unnecessary appeals. The Kenneth\nMeisel Public Servant Claimant Fairness Act seeks to extend the deadline to 60\ndays. According to Air Marshal Association President John Casaretti, \u201cThis bill\nwill ensure that survivors navigating the grief and confusion of a tragic loss\nwill be given ample time to pursue benefits claims.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Congressman Dave Joyce of Ohio, Congressman Andre\u2019 Carson of\nIndiana, and Congressman Pete Stauber of Minnesota joined the Air Marshal\nAssociation in crafting this important bipartisan bill. The three lawmakers\nintroduced H.R. 3050, the \u2018Kenneth Meisel Public Servants Claimant Fairness\nAct\u2019 on May 7, 2021. Yesterday, Senator Brian Schatz of Hawaii introduced the\nSenate companion bill bearing the same name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Casaretti added, \u201cIt is fitting that this legislation, which\nseeks to help all federal employees and survivors, be named after a federal\nofficer who made the ultimate sacrifice.
