Corinne Nystrom\nreceived the 2021 Airport Executive of the Year Award, Mark Koester received\nthe 2021 Corporate Member of the Year Award, and Mike Smejkal received the\nPresident\u2019s Award.&nbsp; Each honoree has made\nlasting positive impacts on airports in Arizona, and AzAA recognizes their\noutstanding contributions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/AzAA-65edit2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18369\" width=\"151\" height=\"213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/AzAA-65edit2.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/AzAA-65edit2-213x300.jpg 213w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 151px) 100vw, 151px\" \/><figcaption><em>Corinne Nystrom<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Corinne Nystrom, A.A.E., who is currently serving as Airport\nDirector of Mesa-Falcon Field Airport, was awarded Airport Executive of the\nYear. Ms. Nystrom has over 34 years of experience in aviation management,\nserving as both Finance and Human Resources Managers, as well as the Airport\nDirector of two different airports. She is known for a tactful and effective\nstyle of communication and is admired for her ability to separate emotions and\nprovide facts when approaching tough issues. Ms. Nystrom has served on the\nRegional Board of Directors for the American Association of Airport Executives\nand two different State Aviation Association Board of Directors including\nserving as the President of AzAA. Ms. Nystrom has used her skills and knowledge\nto present before the state legislature to voice the concerns of Arizona\u2019s\nAirports, has provided input when the new Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)\nAirports District Office Phoenix office was opened, and continuously assists\ncolleagues with problems they may be encountering. Finally, she is an active\nparticipant in her local community, hosting airport open houses for the general\npublic and participating in the Aerospace Academy mentoring program with the\nMesa Public School District.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mark-Koester.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18370\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mark-Koester.jpeg 900w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mark-Koester-150x150.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mark-Koester-300x300.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mark-Koester-60x60.jpeg 60w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><figcaption><em>Mark Koester<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Mark Koester was named 2021 Corporate Member of the\nYear.&nbsp; Mr. Koester is the Managing\nPrincipal of Airport Infrastructure at Stantec. In his three decades working in\nairports and aviation, Mark has partnered with more than 30 airport facilities\nin the United States and internationally. He specializes in managing the design\nof runways, taxiways, and aprons; rural highways and urban arterial streets;\nstormwater hydrology and hydraulic systems; and utilities. He brings a full\nknowledge of FAA regulations, programs, policies, and requirements to\nsuccessfully complete projects in Air Operations Areas. Mark recently served as\nproject principal for the Terminal Apron Expansion at Tucson International\nAirport. Mark was nominated, and ultimately awarded, Corporate Member of the\nYear award for his sustained commitment to the aviation industry throughout his\n30-year career. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mike-Smejkal-web_DSC5734.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18371\" width=\"158\" height=\"237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mike-Smejkal-web_DSC5734.jpg 600w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mike-Smejkal-web_DSC5734-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 158px) 100vw, 158px\" \/><figcaption><em>Mike Smejkal<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Mike Smejkal, PE, A.A.E., received the President\u2019s Award and\nis the Vice President of Planning &amp; Engineering for Tucson Airport\nAuthority (TAA). Mr. Smejkal leads a team that completes TAA\u2019s planning,\nenvironmental, design and construction projects for Tucson International\nAirport and Ryan Field. Mike previously served as the Sr. Director of\nDevelopment Services and Director of Engineering for the TAA. Prior to joining\nthe Airport, Mike was a Project Manager and Engineer for a Midwest based\nconsulting engineering firm. He completed design and construction projects at\nairports ranging in size from Large Hubs to small General Aviation facilities.\nMike is an Accredited Airport Executive and a licensed Professional Engineer.\nHe has a Master\u2019s and Bachelor\u2019s Degree in Civil Engineering from the\nUniversity of Illinois.&nbsp; In May 2021,\nMike completed six years of exemplary service to AzAA as a Board member and the\norganization\u2019s President.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Arizona Airports Association (AzAA) awarded its Airport Executive of the Year, Corporate Member of the Year, and announced the President\u2019s Award at its Spring General Membership Meeting.
