{"id":18121,"date":"2021-04-04T22:06:10","date_gmt":"2021-04-04T22:06:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/saj.pachecostudios.com?p=18121"},"modified":"2021-04-04T22:06:12","modified_gmt":"2021-04-04T22:06:12","slug":"faa-awards-627-7-million-in-airport-improvement-grants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/index.php\/national-news\/faa-awards-627-7-million-in-airport-improvement-grants\/%20","title":{"rendered":"FAA Awards $627.7 Million in Airport Improvement Grants"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The U.S. Department of Transportation\u2019s Federal Aviation\nAdministration (FAA) will award more than $627.7 million in infrastructure and\nsafety projects through the FY2021 Airport Improvement Program (AIP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAirports serve as a lifeline for communities across the\nnation,\u201d said U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg. \u201cModernizing our\ninfrastructure in a way that creates jobs, ensures safety, combats climate\nchange, and fosters equity is a top priority for the Biden-Harris\nAdministration. These Airport Improvement grants will help airports across the\ncountry better serve their communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AIP projects promote safety, efficiency, environmental\nstewardship, infrastructure, and security at the nation\u2019s airports. Today\u2019s\ngrant announcement includes 449 grants to 390 airports in 39 states, Puerto\nRico and the Federated States of Micronesia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese grants are an investment in safety and continued\ninnovation,\u201d said FAA Administrator Steve Dickson. \u201cEvery airport in every\ncommunity plays a vital role in our air transportation system.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples of projects receiving grants include:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Newtok Airport in Newtok, Alaska, over $21.1 Million \u2013 For\nconstruction of a new replacement airport in Newtok, Alaska. The project is\ncritical to the airport and to the village of Newtok, which is home to an\nAlaska Native community of 374 residents. The airport and the community will\nrelocate to higher ground because the ground surrounding the airport and\nvillage is eroding. The residents depend solely on aviation to transport people,\ngoods, mail, medicine and other essential services. The replacement airport\nproject and the relocation of village residents is scheduled for completion in\n2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Willow Run, Detroit, Michigan, over $15.8 Million \u2013 For\nshifting and reconfiguring the existing runway. This project will create jobs\nand continue to improve the safety and efficiency of the airport, which is\nimportant for cargo companies that support the auto industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Salt Lake City International, Utah, over $19.7 Million \u2013 For\nconstructing an apron and taxi lanes as part of a large scale, multi-year\nterminal redevelopment program. Including this grant, approximately $95 million\nin AIP funds have been spent on the project. The project has supported\nthousands of jobs since it began in 2014.&nbsp;\nThis funding will help the airport become more green and sustainable\u2014the\nexpectation is that SLC will attain LEED Gold Certification upon completion of\nthe project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sawyer International, Gwinn, Michigan, over $4.6 Million \u2013\nTo construct, improve, and rehabilitate the expanded hangar building. This\ngrant is provided under the Military Airport Program, which provides grant\nfunding to assist in transforming prior military airports and facilities for\npublic use. This project will create jobs and help to ensure the sustainability\nof regional airline service for the local community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rafael Hernandez Airport in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, over\n$19.5 Million \u2013 For reconstruction of Runway 08\/26. This project is critical\nbecause poor pavement conditions have reduced the payload capacity of aircraft\nusing the runway by 25 percent. The project is scheduled to be completed in\n2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gunnison-Crested Butte Regional, Gunnison, Colorado, over $1\nMillion \u2013 To expand and improve the terminal to allow the airport to meet\nAmericans with Disabilities Act requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Historically, the AIP grant program receives approximately $3.2 billion in Congressional funding each year. The FAA will award more than 1,500 grants this year.
