After a grab-and-go breakfast\nsponsored by Delta Airport Consultants, emcee Greg Jones, Vice President of\nCivil and Aviation Engineer at ADC Engineering and 2019-2021 SCAA President,\nwelcomed all participants to the conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Content began with reports from South Carolina Aeronautics\nCommission Executive Director James Stephens, FAA Southern Region Administrator\nMichael O\u2019Harra, FAA Southern Region Director of the Office of Airports Steven\nHicks, FAA Southern Region ADO Manager Larry Clark and NASAO President and CEO Greg\nPecoraro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"495\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/005-FAA-Awardsedit.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18014\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/005-FAA-Awardsedit.jpg 800w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/005-FAA-Awardsedit-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption> <em>FAA SC FSDO GA Award winners stand with FAASTeam Program Managers. During a working lunch sponsored by WK Dickson,\nJim Campbell, bridge consultant with Contech Engineered Solutions, provided a\ncase study on civil and site solutions for the aviation industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Afternoon speakers included Beaufort County Airports\nDirector Jon Rembold, who detailed Hilton Head Island Airport\u2019s master plan\nthat led to the islands first-ever commercial jet service; South Carolina Aeronautics\nCommission Program Manager Gary Siegfried, who provided program updates and information\non airport responsibilities for monitoring land use around airports; Horry\nCounty Department of Airports Contract and Procurement Administrator April\nJohnston, who detailed the construction contract process from start to finish;\nand McFarland Johnson Project Manager Jennifer Zorn, who outlined best\npractices for detoxing public engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the day, participating sponsors and exhibitors\nwere invited to deliver a brief live advertisement or pre-recorded video,\nproviding an overview of products and services available to attendees.\nAdditionally, ADC Engineering provided entertaining giveaways with\ncornhole-inspired head-to-head competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/001-AV-Set-up-Siegfriededit.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18015\" width=\"225\" height=\"371\"\/><figcaption><em> SCAA delivered an in-person meeting while streaming content to virtual attendees. Pictured is the feed of South Carolina Aeronautics Commission Program Manager Gary Siegfried&#8217;s presentation, &#8220;Incompatible Land Use Around Airports.&#8221;<\/em> <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The Hall of Fame Banquet, sponsored by engineering firm\nTalbert &amp; Bright, saw the induction of two individuals into the S.C.\nAviation Hall of Fame, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. To be considered\nfor the Hall of Fame, nominees must make a substantial contribution to\naviation, performed with a high degree of excellence, above and beyond the\nnominee\u2019s vocation or political position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>William \u201cBill\u201d Kendall was selected for his dedication to\nbuilding from the ground up Greenville Technical College\u2019s FAA Part 147\nAircraft Maintenance Technology program. Kendall served the program as\nrecruiter, instructor, department head, lab assistant, and FAA Designated\nMaintenance Examiner (DME). In 36 years as a DME, Kendall has administered more\nthan 1,400 oral and practical exams, certifying more than 900 technicians,\nincluding most of the college\u2019s current Aircraft Maintenance Technology\nfaculty. Major General Darwin Simpson, US Army (Retired), was selected for his\nwork at Spartanburg Downtown Memorial Airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After retiring from military leadership and a career as a\nchemical company executive, Simpson served as airport director on a voluntary\nbasis from February 2009 through September 2017, drawing a salary of $1 per\nyear. Greenville-Spartanburg International\nAirport Senior Vice President and COO Kevin Howell delivered a session on land development\nplanning alongside Columbia Metropolitan Airport Director of Planning and\nFacilities Frank Murray. FAA Safety Team (FAASTeam) Program Managers Lanny\nCline and James Dangerfield presented the 2020 SC FSDO GA Awards to Charles J.\n\u201cChuck\u201d Copley, III (Certified Flight Instructor of the Year); Scott G. Newsome\n(FAASTeam Representative of the Year); and John L. \u201cChuck\u201d Hyer\u201d (Aviation\nMaintenance Technician of the Year).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To close the conference, Jones announced the 2021 \u2013 2022\nSCAA Executive Committee comprised of Connorton as president, Howell as vice\npresident, Holt Consulting Company\u2019s Ryan Hounshell as secretary\/treasurer and\nJones as immediate past president. Jones welcomed newly elected directors Andy\nBusbee of Michael Baker International, Barbara Clark of Jasper County Council,\nKatie Eleam of Croy Engineering, and Zach Nelson of McFarland Johnson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In-person and virtual attendees can access the session\nrecordings and conference documents until February 2022, and interested parties\nmay register on SCAA\u2019s website, scaaonline.com, to access the same information.\nThe association plans to host its next Annual Conference in Myrtle Beach, S.C.,\nFeb. 16-18, 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SCAA actively promotes and encourages aviation and airport\ndevelopment to meet air transportation needs and assist the state in achieving\neconomic development goals.
