The Boca Raton Airport has become the first airport in the\nUnited States to install the new Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)\ncertified, Hali-Brite LED Rotating Beacon. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A rotating beacon is a visual navigation aid that projects a\nbeam of light used by pilots to visually locate a lighted airport at night. For\ncivil airports, like Boca Raton Airport, the beacon rotates to produce\nalternate clear and green flashes of light visible to pilots from the air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new beacon installed at the airport is the first of its\nkind to be approved by the FAA for use in public airports. \u201cUpgrading the\nrotating beacon to LED offers numerous benefits and is in keeping with the Boca\nRaton Airport Authority\u2019s goal to enhance safety and implement cost-efficient\nenergy saving measures,\u201d said Clara Bennett, Executive Director of the Boca\nRaton Airport Authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Compared with metal halide lamps used in traditional\nbeacons, the LED rotating beacon offers significant energy savings, reduces\nlight pollution, and reduces long-term maintenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Specific benefits include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022             Energy\nsavings: The new L-802A(L) LED rotating beacon has a higher light output than\nthe huge 36\u201d traditional rotating beacons you see at many airports and uses a\nquarter of the power over traditional Beacon technology. The LED beacon uses\nthe power equivalent of about (2) 100watt incandescent light bulbs.  So, the same power we used to use to light a\nsmall garage- we now use to light up the sky for pilots!  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022             Light\npollution:  The LED technology in the\nbeacon allows us to have a much more \u201cdefined\u201d light beam.  The light \u201cwash\u201d up to the sky and down on\nneighborhoods if far less with the new LED beacon.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022             Long-term\nmaintenance:  Traditional Rotating\nbeacons required bulb replacement.  The\nnew LED beacon typical lamp life is 12 years!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
