{"id":17886,"date":"2021-03-07T15:46:01","date_gmt":"2021-03-07T15:46:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/saj.pachecostudios.com?p=17886"},"modified":"2021-03-07T15:46:03","modified_gmt":"2021-03-07T15:46:03","slug":"nbaa-aopa-call-upon-agencies-to-mitigate-impact-of-intentional-gps-interference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/index.php\/national-news\/nbaa-aopa-call-upon-agencies-to-mitigate-impact-of-intentional-gps-interference\/%20","title":{"rendered":"NBAA, AOPA Call Upon Agencies to Mitigate Impact of Intentional GPS Interference"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) and the\nAircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), in a letter to the Federal\nAviation Administration (FAA) and Department of Defense (DOD), expressed\nconcern about restrictions to airspace and airports caused by the intentional\njamming of GPS and are seeking mitigations on the operational impact of these\ninterference events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a letter to the FAA and DOD, the organizations recognized\nthe importance of DOD\u2019s mission and the agency\u2019s need to simulate the loss of\nGPS as part of its effort to defend and maintain the global navigation system.\nHowever, as NBAA and AOPA noted, the National Airspace System (NAS) has become increasingly\nreliant on GPS as the primary source of navigation and aircraft system\nfunctionality, while reducing reliance on ground-based navigational\ninfrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDespite reduced operations in the NAS over the past year,\ngeneral aviation continues to show increased activity and volume, exceeding\ncommercial airline operations,\u201d the letter states. \u201cIn recent months, operators\nhave continued to report operational impacts and reduced access to airspace and\nairports resulting from intentional GPS jamming events.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read NBAA\u2019s and AOPA\u2019s full letter to the FAA and DOD. <a href=\"https:\/\/nbaa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/aircraft-operations\/cns\/gps\/20210225-NBAA-AOPA-Letter-GPS-Interference.pdf\">(PDF)<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The associations\u2019 letter also noted the aviation community\nhad not received a response from the FAA or DOD to a 2018 RTCA report on the\noperational impacts of intentional GPS interference, which included more than\ntwo dozen detailed recommendations to limit the operational impact of these\nevents on civilian air traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the RTCA deliberations, the FAA and DOD acknowledged\nthat the frequency and impact of these intentional jamming events grew\nsignificantly over the preceding decade and would continue to escalate, the\ntrade groups added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe growing reliance on GPS in the National Airspace\nSystem, combined with the increasing frequency of intentional GPS jamming\nevents, makes it imperative that the FAA and the DOD have mitigations in place\nto ensure the safety and reliability of the NAS during these events,\u201d said\nHeidi Williams, NBAA director, air traffic services and infrastructure. \u201cWe\nlook forward to working with the agencies to employ the RTCA report\u2019s\nrecommendations and ensure our national security and the safety and efficiency\nof the NAS.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is vital that pilots have continuity and access to\noptimal navigational and safety tools, of which GPS is vital,\u201d said Jim Coon,\nAOPA senior vice president of government affairs and advocacy. \u201cWe strongly\nsupport our warfighters, but we believe DOD and FAA should review their GPS\ntesting processes so that our nation\u2019s airspace continues to be as safe as\npossible.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), in a letter to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Department of Defense (DOD), expressed concern about restrictions to airspace and airports caused by the intentional jamming of GPS and are seeking mitigations on the operational impact of these interference events.
