Van Nuys Airport (VNY), one of the world\u2019s busiest general\naviation airports, announces the launch of a free virtual airport tour that\ninvites children to experience the adventure of flight, learn how airplanes fly\nand explore exciting careers in aviation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adapted from the airport\u2019s popular on-site tour program,\nwhich has been temporarily suspended due to COVID-19 restrictions, the\n12-minute video tour is geared toward young learners but can be enjoyed by\nteachers and parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cVan Nuys Airport\u2019s virtual tour program is designed to\nprovide educators and parents with engaging resources for children to learn at\nhome, while sparking an interest in aviation,\u201d said VNY Airport Manager Flora\nMargheritis. \u201cDuring this challenging time, we hope to share our passion for\naviation with young learners and inspire people of all ages to explore the\nwonders and possibilities of flight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guided by the airport\u2019s mascot, Vinny, the tour provides a\nbehind-the-scenes look at the diverse aircraft, operations and aviation\nbusinesses located on the 730-acre airfield. Students will view propeller\nairplanes, jets and helicopters take off and land, as well as learn about\ntaxiways, runways, hangars and other airport components. Along the way, they\nwill also meet airport police officers and firefighters who are busy keeping\nthe airfield and community safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To extend the virtual educational experience, opportunities\nare available for tour groups to schedule a live video conference with a pilot,\nair traffic controller, aircraft mechanic, first responder or other airport\nemployee. VNY also offers a variety of online learning activities and resources\nto enjoy from home. Founded in 1928 by America\u2019s early flight pioneers, VNY has\nplayed an important role in both San Fernando Valley and aviation history. Over\nthe decades, it has served as a U.S. military base, center for aerospace\nmanufacturing, famed air race venue and backdrop for Hollywood movie-making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, VNY provides a vital base for life-saving air\nambulance, firefighting, public safety and humanitarian missions.
