Board of Transportation\napproved state funding for various safety and airfield improvement projects at\nnine North Carolina airports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than $279,000 in state funding has been awarded for\nprojects that help the airports increase capacity, attract new jobs and\nbusinesses to their communities, and improve the safety for pilots and\npassengers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Statesville Regional Airport, for example, the funds go\ntowards replacing the airport\u2019s glideslope and localizer, two vital safety\nmechanisms that help pilots land in low visibility conditions. The current\nequipment has reached the end of its operating life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The grants the N.C. Board of Transportation approved\nprovide:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>$130,473 in additional funds to Statesville\nRegional Airport to replace the glideslope and localizer.<\/li><li>$148,539 toward the Airport Safety Enhancement\nProgram, which helps to provide matching funds for federal safety grants at\nrural airports. These funds are available for safety projects at Columbus\nCounty, Hyde County, Jackson County, Martin County, Montgomery County, Mount\nOlive Municipal, Northeastern Regional (Edenton) and Richmond County Airports.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>North Carolina\u2019s 72 public airports serve as vital economic\nengines connecting people and business enterprises with the world. Airports and\naviation-related industries contribute more than $61 billion to North\nCarolina\u2019s economy each year, according to the 2021 State of Aviation report.\nThey support 373,000 jobs, generate more than $2.5 billion in state and local\ntax revenue and provide more than $15 billion in personal income. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The funds awarded do not necessarily represent the total\ncost of the project.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In its January meeting, the N.C.
