{"id":17506,"date":"2021-01-24T15:32:34","date_gmt":"2021-01-24T15:32:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/saj.pachecostudios.com?p=17506"},"modified":"2021-01-24T15:32:36","modified_gmt":"2021-01-24T15:32:36","slug":"youth-stem-ambassadors-to-peek-inside-the-world-of-aviation-and-aerospace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/index.php\/state-news\/texas\/youth-stem-ambassadors-to-peek-inside-the-world-of-aviation-and-aerospace\/%20","title":{"rendered":"Youth STEM Ambassadors to Peek Inside the World of Aviation and Aerospace"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Local students will expand their exploration of STEM careers\nby tapping San Antonio\u2019s rich aviation and aerospace industry through resources\nprovided by the Dee Howard Foundation in partnership with the Intercultural\nDevelopment Research Association (IDRA) Texas Chief Science Officer program.\nThe international CSO program empowers middle and school high school students\nto deepen their schools\u2019 STEM culture and career awareness through youth-led\non-campus projects and interaction with STEM professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe partnership with the Dee Howard Foundation will foster\nstudents\u2019 discovery of STEM pathways and exposure to aviation and aerospace\ncareers,\u201d said IDRA President &amp; CEO Celina Moreno. \u201cIt is particularly\npowerful during the pandemic when CSO students are executing their action plans\nwith adjustments for new health precautions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Dee Howard Foundation provides virtual tours focused on\naviation and aerospace career pathways for CSO students, who also will interact\nvirtually with STEM professionals. In addition, the foundation provides its\npopular aerospace-focused curriculum to CSO teachers and advisors to use in\ntheir classrooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Dee Howard Foundation is honored to have the\nopportunity to collaborate with IDRA and include the IDRA Texas Chief Science\nOfficer program as part of the DHF Pre-K thru 16+ Aeronautical STEM Pathway\nInitiative,\u201d said Wayne I. Fagan, chair, The Dee Howard Foundation. \u201cWe see\ngreat synergism between the two programs for the benefit of the youth of our\ncommunity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This new partnership is initially focused on students in the\nSan Antonio area and will be expanded over time to Houston, Galveston and other\ncities in Texas to help more CSO youth STEM ambassadors foster their peers\u2019\ndiscovery of STEM pathways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the CSO program, each participating school selects at\nleast two students to serve as their Chief Science Officers for the school\nyear. IDRA provides leadership training and mentoring for students as they\ndevelop and carry out action plans to encourage STEM at their school. Action\nplans can include things like coordinating field trips, hosting science nights,\nstarting STEM-related clubs, initiating student-led civic action projects, or\nbringing speakers from local industries to engage students in conversations\nabout the STEM workforce.
