The Unit Citation Award, given by the organization\u2019s national\nheadquarters, recognized unprecedented growth and accomplishments during 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the online presentation ceremony, CAP North Central\nRegion Commander, Col. John O\u2019Neill, praised South Dakota CAP members. He noted\nthat the award is rare that he has never seen one presented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou very clearly earned this award in 2019, but you haven\u2019t\nstopped,\u201d he said. \u201c2020 has been a crazy year, and you in South Dakota Wing\nhave stepped to the forefront, still, and continued this tradition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the Wing\u2019s accomplishments in 2019:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Recruitment \u2013 An increase in squadrons in the\nWing Aerospace<\/li><li>Education \u2013 Camps in rural and underserved\ncommunities<\/li><li>Legislative Squadron \u2013 Huge increase in\nmembership. Nearly all 105 members of the South Dakota State Legislators are\nalso members of the legislative squadron, as well as the growth of other units<\/li><li>Emergency Services \u2014 First wing to use sUAS\n(drones) in a real mission<\/li><li>Emergency Services \u2014 Developed national training\nstandards for the use of sUAVs<\/li><li>Emergency Services \u2014 Conducted a variety of\nmissing persons and disaster relief missions<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In the last several days, the South Dakota Wing has assisted\nthe South Dakota Department of Health with COVID-19 vaccination transport\nflights. Additional flights are anticipated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South Dakota Wing has over 400 members in units in\nBrookings, Custer, Miller, Mitchell, Pierre, Rapid City, Sioux Falls,\nSpearfish, and Tea. Wing aircraft and aircrews are located in Sioux Falls,\nPierre, Rapid City, Spearfish, and Brookings. The wing can deploy its six\naircraft and ground teams where needed to assist in emergency response and\nother support to local, state, tribal, and federal agencies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>South Dakota Civil Air Patrol has received a rare award for excellence.
