The state is developing the nation\u2019s first network for\nbeyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). After an\nintensive request-for-proposal process, the Northern Plains UAS Test Site,\nwhich leads the initiative, selected Greteman Group to create a name, identity,\nand brand as bold and aspirational as the network itself. Through this process,\nwe have also developed a website, social media strategy, and aggressive\noutreach campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe chose Greteman Group as our marketing partner for\nmultiple reasons,\u201d says Nicholas Flom, executive director, Northern Plains UAS\nTest Site. \u201cTheir aviation expertise and experience helped them quickly\nunderstand our target markets and how to connect with them. Frankly, their\nthinking and passion blew us away.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Simple Name for a Complex Network<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Vantis-logo-395x230-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17116\" width=\"187\" height=\"109\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Vantis-logo-395x230-1.jpg 395w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Vantis-logo-395x230-1-300x175.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 187px) 100vw, 187px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The agency built upon North Dakota\u2019s existing prominence as\na UAS ecosystem to highlight the competitive advantage of a sky open to UAS\ncommercialization through this first-of-its-kind statewide BVLOS network. The\nchosen name \u2013 Vantis \u2013 is an invented word, providing a clean slate to build\nmeaning and the brand. The network provides a vantage point through UAS\ninfrastructure and support with regulatory approvals, industry applications and\nusability, and a path to commercialization. The dramatic, head-on\nattitude places a strong, centered V directly in your line of sight. The shape\nand radiating lines of various weights symbolize a rising sun on the horizon,\nsuggesting innovation and birth of a new idea. The clean, stylized wordmark\nbalances and grounds the logo. The strong outcomes\nreflect that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The virtual UAS Summit &amp; Expo, held Oct. 28-29, served\nas a platform for the grand unveiling of Vantis. Media outreach, a\npresentation, social media channels and a website were all coordinated to\nactivate simultaneously the first morning of the convention. Earned media \u2013\nnewspaper, magazine, radio and TV \u2013 reached an audience of more than 5 million\npeople for an ad equivalency of $145,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mobile friendly website \u2013 VantisUAS.com \u2013 serves as a\none-stop repository for information, telling the network\u2019s story and promoting\nits capabilities through clear infographics, compelling visuals and partner\ntestimonials. Strong calls-to-action prompt potential partners, entrepreneurs\nand users to leverage the network and highlight how Vantis works for North\nDakota. Targeted promotion will begin in early 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Nation\u2019s UAS Epicenter<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The uses for UAS are growing exponentially \u2013 commercial,\nagricultural, recreational, scientific. UAS can go where manned aircraft cannot,\nor would not want, to go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>North Dakota has played a leadership role from the\nbeginning. Its UAS achievements include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>First public-private UAS business park<\/li><li>Undergraduate and graduate university programs\nin UAS studies<\/li><li>Original FAA-designated UAS test site<\/li><li>Lead participant in FAA UAS Integration Pilot\nProgram and UAS BEYOND Program<\/li><li>Extensive research and development to include\nNASA UAS Traffic Management (UTM) initiatives<\/li><li>Enabled commercial activities to include BVLOS\napproval to \u201cclimb to 10k\u201d using ground-based radar and criteria-based BVLOS\nwaiver to inspect transmission lines<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past decade the North Dakota UAS industry has grown\nfrom several dozen workers to more than 1,000, becoming the nation\u2019s UAS\ncentral hub. In 2019, its state legislature appropriated a $33 million\ninvestment over two years with $28 million dedicated to establishing the\nnation\u2019s first statewide BVLOS UAS network.
