Every CAP cadet under\nage 18 is eligible for five flights in a powered aircraft (usually one of the\nWing\u2019s Cessna 172s or 182), five flights in a glider aircraft, and an unlimited\nnumber of backseat flights when conditions allow. Orientation flights are always\nfree to cadets. The \u201corientation flights,\u201d as they are called, took place at\nHartness State Airport in Springfield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/CAP-3-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16160\" width=\"269\" height=\"179\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/CAP-3-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/CAP-3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/CAP-3.jpg 1430w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 269px) 100vw, 269px\" \/><figcaption><em>Photos courtesy of the Vermont Wing of the Civil Air Patrol.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe thrill of flying, and the related educational\nopportunities, along with the spirit of community service and leadership, are\njust several of the many things the Wing and CAP offer young Vermonters,\u201d said\nCol Ann Brechbuhl, Commander of the Vermont Wing.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the glider was un-tethered from the tow-plane, a flight\nlasted about 20 minutes. While soaring, the cadets were allowed to take over\nthe controls and receive a hands-on lesson in the science of flying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participating Cadets were from the Wing\u2019s Green Mountain\nComposite Squadron, based at Burlington International Airport in South\nBurlington. In addition to the orientation flights, Cadets can participate in\none week camps where cadets become student pilots. Thanks to funding and\nvolunteer FAA Certified Flight Instructors from CAP, Cadets receive official\ninstruction towards initial pilot training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/CAP-Kids-1-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16161\" width=\"284\" height=\"189\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/CAP-Kids-1-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/CAP-Kids-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/CAP-Kids-1.jpg 1430w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 284px) 100vw, 284px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Col Brechbuhl noted that the Cadets received extensive\ntraining in ground handling of the glider, an introduction to the basics of\nflight and flight safety.
