Called \u201cTruckee Tahoe Honor Flyover,\u201d it\u2019s\nscheduled to begin at 11a.m. covering 18 targeted landmarks, including Lake\nTahoe and is expected to finish by 12:30pm, stretching 130 nautical miles. The\nlead aircraft for this mission is Gooney Bird Group Betsy\u2019s Biscuit Bomber\nC-47, piloted by U.S. Navy veteran Sherman Smoot and Scott Stelzle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/D-Day_Squadron_Logo_75th_Final_OL-01c-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15838\" width=\"213\" height=\"213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/D-Day_Squadron_Logo_75th_Final_OL-01c-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/D-Day_Squadron_Logo_75th_Final_OL-01c-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/D-Day_Squadron_Logo_75th_Final_OL-01c-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/D-Day_Squadron_Logo_75th_Final_OL-01c-60x60.png 60w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 213px) 100vw, 213px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPreparing for these special flyover missions is\nexhilarating. Most of all, we appreciate the opportunity to bring \u2018flying\nhistory\u2019 to communities near and far to salute veterans, commemorative events,\nIndependence Day and in this case, healthcare workers on the frontlines\nfighting the COVID pandemic,\u201d remarked mission group leader, Scott Stelzle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the pandemic continues to be a concern and for everyone\u2019s\nsafety, no public viewing or gathering is permitted at the Truckee Tahoe\nairport. Our squadron encourages local residents to #LookUp as these radial\nengines roar with honor, tribute and celebration. The C-47 was key to ending\nWWII and famously helped liberate German-occupied France by dropping\npathfinders and paratroopers, even towing gliders during Operation Overlord on\nD-Day, June 6, 1944.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organized by the Truckee Tahoe Air Show &amp; Family Festival\ncommittee along with the Truckee Tahoe Airport, our squadron C-47 type aircraft\nwill have several additional warbirds join the ranks of this flyover, including\nT-6 Texans and a T-28.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No stranger to tight formation and historic tribute flights,\nthe D-Day Squadron launched from Oxford, Connecticut\u2019s KOXC airport on May 19,\n2019 for their \u201cMission to Normandy.\u201d&nbsp;\nThey successfully crossed the North Atlantic with 15 C-47 type aircraft,\ncompleting multiple paratrooper drops and a Presidential flyover for the US and\nFrench First Families while participating in events including the 75th\nanniversary of the Normandy landings, the 70th anniversary of the Berlin\nAirlift, and commemorations in the U.S., U.K., France, Germany and Italy\nspanning most of June 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile our 75th anniversary mission was epic, we\u2019re honored\nto continue showcasing the very aircraft flown by and that carried our Greatest\nGeneration,\u201d shared Lyndse Costabile, director of corporate relations,\ncommunications and marketing, for the D-Day Squadron. \u201cWe look forward to\nshowcasing \u2018Flying Freedom\u2019 to the Truckee Tahoe community this national\nholiday and bring hope to our frontline healthcare workers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The flight path graphic is forthcoming and will publish on the D-Day Squadron <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/DDaySquadron\/\">social media pages<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.truckeetahoeairshow.com\/?mc_cid=33d04289f6&amp;mc_eid=81833f2b15\">Truckee Tahoe Honor Flyover<\/a> features D-Day Squadron aircraft Betsy\u2019s Biscuit Bomber C-47 leading D-Day Doll C-53 of the Commemorative Air Force\u2019s Inland Empire Wing (IEW), Legend Foundation\u2019s Legend \u2018Liberty\u2019 Airways C-47, Mission Boston, LLC\u2019s Virginia Ann C-47, Benovia Winery\u2019s Spirit of Benovia C-53, and What\u2019s Up Doc C-47 of the Palm Springs Air Museum.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Formation flyover missions continue for the D-Day Squadron as they complete final preparations this weekend to position six DC-3 (C-47) historic warbirds to the Truckee Tahoe community as a special gift for the local community &#8211; celebrating our nation\u2019s independence and frontline healthcare workers fighting COVID.
